Country group Lady Antebellum changes name to Lady A
2 hours ago
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) Grammy-winning country group Lady Antebellum is changing its name to Lady A, with members saying they are regretful and embarrassed for not taking into consideration the words associations with slavery.
The band, made up of Hillary Scott, Charles Kelley and Dave Haywood, made the announcement Thursday on their social media.
The groups first self-titled album came out in 2008, and included the Grammy-winning No. 1 country hit I Run To You, then it achieved crossover success on the pop charts with the nine-times platinum Need You Now. They won three Grammys for that song, including Record of the Year. They have also won numerous Country Music Association and Academy of Country Music awards during their nearly 14 year career.

(8,543 posts)I grew up in the South and white people were taught that antebellum was a good word.
So Im glad they are moving forward to some extent.

(16,835 posts)especially one with two guys in it. The word "antebellum" means " pre-war, " of course, and I always associate it with ladies in hoop skirts walking around sniffing magnolias. Life was not that romantic back then for about 95% of southerners, though. Most people worked their assets off just to be able to eat, even those who weren't slaves. Antebellum times are nothing to long for.

(1,639 posts)And that fairly pretty image is probably why the group originally chose the word paired with the term, "Lady".
But I always knew what the word meant, and I did wonder about the appropriateness of the band name in this day and age.
In other ways, the word isn't good or bad in itself. One can write about "the work of abolitionists in the Antebellum period", or one can talk about "the gracious Antebellum mansions". The feeling a person brings to those phrases can certainly vary.
I think for some people the "bellum" part of the word is misleading, because "bell" sounds pretty even though the actual word is a cousin of the term, "bellicose".
Saw this online and it describes what I am saying. (And better than I am doing.)

Bellicose means eager for war. Bellicose is from Latin bellum "war." A near synonym is belligerent, from the same Latin noun. You may wonder if they're connected to the Latin bellus "pretty, handsome," which gives us the names Bella or Isabella, as well as belle "a beautiful woman." They're not.

(1,769 posts)PLANTATIONS. Did that not clue them in to the connotation of the word? To be honest, I had never heard of them. But 3 white people naming their group after the era of slave owning plantations is not a group I would ever follow. No one mentioned it might be a bad name in the past 14 years? Nope, not buying it.
