Russia's Putin Declares State Of Emergency After Arctic Circle Oil Spill

Source: BBC News

(49 mins. ago). Russia's President Vladimir Putin has declared a state of emergency after 20,000 tonnes of oil leaked into a river within the Arctic Circle. The spill happened when a fuel tank at a power plant near the Siberian city of Norilsk collapsed last Friday.

President Putin expressed anger after discovering officials only learnt about the incident two days later. The plant is owned by a subsidiary of Norilsk Nickel, which is the world's leading nickel and palladium producer.

And in a televised video conference on Wednesday, Mr Putin lambasted the head of the company over the timeliness of its response. Why did government agencies only find out about this two days after the fact?" he asked the subsidiary's chief, Sergei Lipin. "Are we going to learn about emergency situations from social media?"

The region's governor, Alexander Uss, had earlier told President Putin that he became aware of the oil spill on Sunday after "alarming information appeared in social media."...

An investigation into the accident was ordered by Mr Putin and a power plant manager has since been detained.

- The leaked diesel oil drifted some 12km (7.5 miles) from the site of the accident.

we've granted everyone the right to pollute with little oversight. It must be worth trillions to oil companies and foreign companies too

So 20,000 tons (US) is just over 5,700,000 gallons of diesel.

(20,000 tons x 2,000 lbs per ton/7 lbs per gallon)

That's a lot of old dinosaurs in the river!

Thats bad! ...I'm NOT downplaying this at all but in terms of environmental damage Russia has done inside their country & the former Soviet satellites not sure if this one ranks in the Top 10. I thought we were careless playing with nukes & the materials to process them during the Cold War...Damn there are entire villages where people are deformed from what they just left there. Its horrible.
