"I find it baffling and reprehensible that any Catholic facility would allow itself to be so egregiously misused and manipulated in a fashion that violates our religious principles, which call us to defend the rights of all people even those with whom we might disagree," said Archbishop Wilton Gregory in a statement just after 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, the same time the president was due to arrive the site.

"Saint Pope John Paul II was an ardent defender of the rights and dignity of human beings," wrote Gregory, who was installed last May as the city's first African American archbishop. "His legacy bears vivid witness to that truth. He certainly would not condone the use of tear gas and other deterrents to silence, scatter or intimidate them for a photo opportunity in front of a place of worship and peace."

During this visit, the president took a photo at a statue of John Paul II but did not deliver remarks. According to the White House pool report, the President and the First Lady were also scheduled to visit the Luminous Mysteries Chapel, the John Paul II Blood Relic, and a Madonna Icon.

As the president arrived at the shrine, he was greeted by protesters from a number of Catholic social advocacy groups, including Pax Christi USA, Maryknoll Office for Global Concerns, Franciscan Action Network, and NETWORK Lobby.

WA POST:

President Trump triggered sharp condemnation from top religious leaders for the second time in two days on Tuesday, with Washington Archbishop Wilton Gregory slamming his visit to a D.C. shrine honoring Pope John Paul II.

In his statement, Gregory noted the legacy of Pope John Paul II, suggesting he would not have condoned Trump's actions, including his walk to St. John's as hundreds of demonstrators nearby were protesting the death of George Floyd last week in the custody of the Minneapolis police.

"Saint Pope John Paul II was an ardent defender of the rights and dignity of human beings. His legacy bears vivid witness to that truth," Gregory said. "He certainly would not condone the use of tear gas and other deterrents to silence, scatter or intimidate them for a photo opportunity in front of a place of worship and peace."

Trumpís appearances in front of St. Johnís and at the shrine were seen as attempts to appeal to his conservative evangelical and Catholic voting base. Both appearances were met with fierce condemnation by religious progressives ó and also concern from some religious conservatives.

1. The more angry protests and signs Trump sees, the better.....

Trump needs to know that people are angry of what HE represents. He needs to know American attitudes are changing.

2. In just 24 hours Trump has managed to insult and outrage

the Catholics and the Episcopalians. Many of the fundies consider those denominations to be heretical, so maybe he doesn't care. It will be interesting to see what the Bible-thumpers have to say about Trump's blasphemous appearance before a church, waving a Bible, after having his brownshirts teargas peaceful protesters for a cynical photo-op.

6. We all know who trump is now. Even people who gave him a chance hate him.

Didn't he cut funding to Catholic charities ? They disappointed trump by helping poor immigrants I think.
