New Trump public land rules will let Alaska hunters kill bear cubs in dens
Source: Guardian
The ‘amazingly cruel’ move by the National Park Service reverses Obama-era regulations which also affect wolves and coyotes Emily Holden in Washington Thu 28 May 2020 06.30 EDT The Trump administration is finalizing rules that will allow hunters in Alaska’s national preserves to shoot bears and wolves, and their cubs and pups, while they are in their dens. The National Park Service is reversing regulations written by the Barack Obama administration, which banned some of the much-criticized practices for hunting the predators, including luring bears with food like doughnuts. Jesse Prentice-Dunn, policy director for the Center for Western Priorities, called the rule change “amazingly cruel” and said it was “just the latest in a string of efforts to reduce protections for America’s wildlife at the behest of oil companies and trophy hunters”. The park service’s deputy director, David Vela, said the change would “more closely align hunting and trapping regulations with those established by the state of Alaska”. The regulation is expected to be formally published this week. Alaska laws would still apply. The state generally prohibits killing bear cubs, but it allows some exceptions in Alaska’s interior region. 18. Well, I would say this: As long as they are living a totally traditional lifestyle, with no Western
components, then OK.
If they are driving up to the dens in SUVs, then getting out ATVs, snow mobiles, etc. and shooting with guns, then I call bullshit. Not all "traditional" practices are acceptable behavior. |

Lol. It’s not what you think, but whatever. It is part of their culture, there are plenty of bears, and if they eat it - why do I care?
We eat lamb, veal, and roasting chicken - all young animals. Steers and heifers too. If you eat meat, something has to die. I’m not really into this fair chase nonsense. I am all about eating what you kill |

20. I'm a vegetarian, FWIW. "Part of their culture" is not an acceptable excuse for cruelty.
FGM is "culture".
Should Scandinavian countries be allowed to rape and pillage during non-growing seasons because it's "part of their traditional culture"? If they are eating Big Macs at their local McDonald's then, no, it's not "part of their culture." It's just an excuse for cruelty. |

32. No, you need to believe that's what I said in order to make your point. Which you failed to do
because your reacting to words and presumptions that came from you, not me. So again, which one of the people you posted has been mauled or killed for poaching or hunting? Which has killed a wolf or bear and risked being mauled or killed? Are you suggesting one can be mauled by a duck? Or killed by anti-poachers for killing one?

34. When I asked if you felt this way about *all* hunters, you asked if I was suggesting you shouldn't.
Quite obviously, none of the individuals I posted have been mauled or killed by animals. Again, to clarify: Do you only find joy in reports of the violent deaths of those who hunt wolves & bears (or are killed by anti-poachers), or do you also derive pleasure from accounts of duck and deer hunters dying in the field (as does occasionally happen)?

27. "the Tanana Chiefs Conference,...supports the rollbacks."
"Victor Joseph, chair of the Tanana Chiefs Conference, said the group representing 42 tribes in the Interior supports the rollback. The 2015 rule was implemented without “adequate tribal consultation," he said in a statement sent by the park service.
“The previous limitations enacted in 2015 threatened our way of life and our centuries-long sustainable management practices," he said in the statement." https://www.adn.com/alaska-news/2020/05/21/trump-administration-moves-to-ease-rules-for-hunting-bears-and-wolves-on-federal-lands-in-alaska/ |
