Trump says he only will submit to GOP oversight for his administration

By Kevin Liptak, CNN

Updated 12:47 PM ET, Tue May 5, 2020

(CNN) -- President Donald Trump said he was allowing Dr. Anthony Fauci to testify before the Republican-led Senate but not the Democrat-led House, calling it a "set up."

"The House is a bunch of Trump-haters," Trump claimed as he was departing the White House for Arizona for a tour of a Honeywell plant.

Trump's remarks amounted to an admission that he was looking to prevent Democrats from conducting their oversight duties when it comes to his administration's coronavirus response, even as he's willing to allow Republicans to proceed. Last week, the White House said its attempts to block Fauci from testifying were due to scheduling and time-management issues, which Trump did not mention on Tuesday.

The White House issued a memo Monday seeking to limit task force members' hearing appearances after recently blocking Fauci from testifying before a House subcommittee. Fauci is still expected to appear before a Republican-led Senate committee later this month.

Trump admitted the difference in treatment for the House versus the Senate was who controls each chamber. He said the House is rooting for him to fail in combating coronavirus.

No surprise at the headline yet the horse has already left the barn. Firing the IG for issuing the shortage report, barring ANY of the health care folks from ANY House invitation, the just released 300K+ death rate, Dr. Fauci stating the very day after Trump's claim that we are opening too soon and many deaths (see 300K+) may easily follow.

Heck, Trumpy is too late to stop the avalanche of bad news for him and his crooked administration. His constant barrage of negatives to all the media has them digging even deeper for stories that legitimately cast him in a very negative light. Of late, even WH insiders we are told who had been silent until now have cracked and given out lots of dirt on him. It was inevitable that all of his protestations at everyone would come back to bite him in his big fat orange ass.

While the Democrats were doing everything they could to help the country -- acquire medical supplies, pass the stimulus package -- the Repugs were only concerned with one thing -- themselves. When Trump said he wasn't going to allow independent oversight of the $2 trillion, the Repugs should have fulfilled their congressional duties to act as a check against abuse by the executive. They didn't, and as a result a huge chunk of the money went to wealthy corporations, hedge fund managers, and well-connected donors.

The Repugs have not been pushing for more tests. Nor have they investigated FEMA's theft of supplies enroute to the states.

The Repugs did not speak out against Trump's insane idea about injecting disinfectant.

Every obscene thing Trump has said or done, the Repugs have condoned or supported. Politics has always taken precedent over science, party over country. By the time the election rolls around, we should be in the middle of the third wave of this pandemic, and Trump and his minions will still be doing nothing to get it under control.

"Trump and the Republican Party" should become the words the Dems repeat throughout this election.

That has been the GOP goal for more than forty years. Where are the chants calling out trump as a dictator from the right? You know, those same goons who considered Obama a dictator only because he was a Democrat, or more precisely a black Democrat? The GOP is rotten to its core and allowing Trump this unfettered power will only result in the death of our country. "Checks and balances"??? That's only for losers apparently. Fuck these people and what they are trying to do to our country.

How does Trump intend to insulate himself from Democrats in the Senate? They aren't barred from subcommittees and committees. While they can't win any resolutions or votes, their questions will be on the record.

Congressional oversight aka checks and balances of co-equal branches of
government has nothing to do with political parties but with the "rule of law."

The Separation of Powers devised by the framers of the Constitution was designed to do one primary thing: to prevent the majority from ruling with an iron fist. Based on their experience, the framers shied away from giving any branch of the new government too much power. The separation of powers provides a system of shared power known as Checks and Balances.

Three branches are created in the Constitution. The Legislative, composed of the House and Senate, is set up in Article 1. The Executive, composed of the President, Vice-President, and the Departments, is set up in Article 2. The Judicial, composed of the federal courts and the Supreme Court, is set up in Article 3.
