Georgia is going to be a disaster.
Texas will be another disaster because it did little testing.

(70,447 posts)Internal government documents obtained by the Center for Public Integrity show that officials are projecting that hundreds of thousands of Americans will die if state governments across the United States lift pandemic lockdown restrictions.
Federal health officials estimated in early April that more than 300,000 Americans could die from COVID-19 if all social distancing measures are abandoned, and later estimates pushed the possible death toll even higher, reporter Liz Essley Whyte writes on the Center for Public Integritys website. In the documents, the best guess for how things will play out without further mitigation says that coronavirus cases and deaths would double about every five and a half days.

As horrific as this sounds, experts who spoke with Whyte actually said they were underestimating the death toll of lifting lockdown restrictions.
Their models way too optimistic, said Ashish Jha, director of the Harvard Global Health Institute. Theyre getting their analysis wrong.

(23,061 posts)This will have huge impacts here, even if DeSantis doesn't open up more businesses soon, which I expect mini-me to do. I heard numerous people on the radio talking about going to GA on Fri. to work out at the gyms and get haircuts and maybe even massages. Great!!! They are making us more unsafe and they are fucking idiots. These same people talking had a coworker in ICU for 5 days due to CV and he was only 45. These rw'ers are so fucking stupid, one of them asked will this be safe? The others all said of course it will, there's not been a lot of hospitalizations in southern GA. and this isn't all it's cracked up to be anyway. They damn well know better, but rw'ers got to idiot and risk all of our lives for their stupidity.

(21,256 posts)one of the reasons that this virus is so wicked is that people with good immune systems can have it and walk around with it spreading it to people who are vulnerable. They rationalize that it is just like the flu. Talk is now coming out that this virus may have several strains which will make getting a vaccine extremely difficult.
IMO this virus is way more dangerous than people are giving it credit.

(6,908 posts)We are trying to not be labeled Southern in New Orleans, we are from Louisiana. 😂
Our governor says you may soon get a non-emergency surgery if the hospitals are not over-burdened. Not much of a re-opening, but enough to fool knuckle-draggers.
The fact nobody mentions his name but only report the remarkable decline in hospitalizations is how a leader works in crisislet your work be your words. And his best work? Louisiana leads or is among the leaders in the nation in per-capital in testing.
That is leadership.

(21,256 posts)on the other hand the states that are opening up have done little testing. It will not end well for them.

(3,280 posts)In an effort to bring "balance" the first thing they do is report what Trump says about the states opening "safely." This is then followed up by a pretty weak "despite warnings." Stop reporting what he says without analysis. This is dangerous, it is reckless. People are dying. How about "Ignoring serious warnings from multiple agencies, Trump says that US states are opening "safely.""

(7,402 posts)When there is no data to support the claim? Look at Wisconsin. While they didn't "open up" they did hold an election, which was like a small, temporary opening up, and yesterday it was announced that 6 voters and 1 poll worker have come down with CV-19 traced to 1 polling place. That took 7 days. His "safely reopening" claim is political spin as there is absolutely no data to support the claim. And when the data does emerge it will almost certainly paint a vastly different picture.

(2,897 posts)In our household; my wife lost her job permanently as a result of COVID; along with our healthcare.
Our short term/mid range outlook is survival mode even IF if were safe to go out in public.
Wed love to go back to normal however financially; it just cannot happen.
This grand reopening isnt going to shock the system back to life the way economists believe; methinks.
I reckon we arent the ones...

You can only fool some of the people some of the time!
Picture in your mind who the most likely employees of the listed businesses in link below that are gonna be allowed to reopen would be. THEN, picture them getting corncobbed on their unemployment benefits. Most of us KNOW, or can google, the usual eligibility rules to qualify for such benefits.
