Fauci, Navarro got into heated argument over unproven COVID-19 treatment: report

Source: The Hill

Anthony Fauci, the nation's top infectious disease expert, reportedly clashed recently with White House trade official Peter Navarro over the malaria drug hydroxychloroquine and its use as a possible treatment for COVID-19.

During a meeting Saturday first reported by Axios, Navarro reportedly accused Fauci of opposing the administration's temporary ban on travel from China after Fauci cautioned against the administration promoting the use of hydroxychloroquine to treat the coronavirus.

"You were the one who early on objected to the travel restrictions with China," Navarro reportedly said to Fauci.

There's no evidence Fauci has ever publicly criticized the administration's approach to travel from China amid the outbreak, and on March 12, Fauci praised such a policy during a press briefing.

So, the trade official decided to tell of Fauci because Fauci keeps on insisting on facts and science? Trump does not care if it works or is effective. The key thing is that he has a story to sell sort of like Trump University. Who cares if it teaches you squat? Likewise, why not sell a miracle cure like his buddy Alex Jones.

2. Navarro is not . . .

a medical person nor a expert in viruses, and yet Dr. Fauci will be ousted.

That is where the administration is. Incompetence.

3. And that China travel ban wasn't a ban at all. 1000s traveled.

Everything Trump says is a lie.

5. Has Joe Biden begun assembling medical specialists?

And if so, is it possible for Fauci and others (assuming he is eventually dismissed by Trump) defect as an unofficial liason?

7. Welcome to DU, jstephenj.

Yes, he has. I think there are six of them. One is Dr. Zeke Emanuel who's on MSNBC all the time now as a medical specialist.

12. No, he should not. That would get him fired, and we need him where he is.

He is being sensible and keeping personal politics out of the situation where he needs to be taken seriously by everyone. If he starts in with politics, then hard core Republicans will disregard anything he has ever said.

This is a pandemic - science must come before politics. He is a scientist in this position, not a representative of any political party.

8. Navarro and trump are promoting the use of this drug for a reason,

It almost always involves making money for trump behind it. Follow the money and it'll likely expose him for it.

15. Peter Navarro on his qualifications: 'I'm a social scientist'

Peter Navarro on his qualifications to disagree with Dr. Anthony Fauci on coronavirus treatments: 'I'm a social scientist'

By Chandelis Duster, CNN

Updated 10:12 AM ET, Mon April 6, 2020

Washington (CNN) -- White House trade adviser Peter Navarro on Monday said he was qualified to engage and disagree with Dr. Anthony Fauci on the use of an anti-malarial drug as a coronavirus treatment -- which is not yet proven as effective -- saying, "I'm a social scientist."

"Doctors disagree about things all the time. My qualifications in terms of looking at the science is that I'm a social scientist," he told CNN's John Berman on "New Day." "I have a Ph.D. And I understand how to read statistical studies, whether it's in medicine, the law, economics or whatever."

Navarro's remarks follow reports that he clashed with officials in the Situation Room over the weekend about the unproven efficacy of hydroxychloroquine in treating coronavirus. While the task force was discussing the latest on the anti-malaria drug, an exasperated Navarro lashed out at Fauci, the nation's top infectious disease expert, who has urged caution around the drug, a person familiar with the meeting told CNN.

Navarro had brought a stack of paperwork about the drug with him into the room, arguing it was proof that it could work to treat coronavirus, which Fauci disagreed with because it was not data.

Axios first reported on the disagreement inside the White House about the drug.

18. He is ignoring what he should have learned

A "Social Scientist" with a PhD should understand sampling size and control groups.

He needs to go back to school.

17. The guy's an economist, not an MD.

He's advocating the use of an unproven drug because he wants it to be an effective treatment, not because it is.

All he really wants is to open up the economy again. Nothing else matters to him, including the health and safety of the people he would have use this drug.
