Man accused of killing Nev. trooper was paranoid over coronavirus, court documents say

Source: WBAY-TV, ABC affiliate in Green Bay, WI

ELY, Nev. (KVVU/CNN) - A 65-year-old man from Nevada charged in the death of a state trooper had been claiming, for weeks prior to the incident, that COVID-19 was flowing in the water and sewer systems, according to court documents.

John Dabritz, 65, appeared in court Wednesday on numerous charges, including open murder and third-degree arson, related to the death of 47-year-old Sgt. Ben Jenkins with the Nevada Highway Patrol.

Police say Jenkins pulled over Friday after he saw a car on the side of the road near Ely, Nevada. When he approached the car, Dabritz allegedly shot and killed him then stole his uniform and squad car.

2. For people who walk the razor's edge

between appearing nearly normal and being batshit crazy, the additional stress of this crisis can push them over the edge. The trooper and the murderer may both be victims of the virus. I suspect that as the death toll soars, you will see and hear of a lot more incidents like this. Paranoia will destroy 'ya.

I think it is just a matter of time before you see some small right-wing groups striking out.

3. This!

Well said!

Another reason we need a real president to unify the country & calm people's fears.

Stress has a threshold. Beyond that, it is sadly often psychotic split time.

More blood on shitler's tiny hands! 🤬🤬

6. Don't worry.

Gun shops are essential businesses -- as per Trump administration.

8. More details here....

Las Vegas Review-Journal.....

Locals say suspect in NHP trooper’s killing had COVID-19 obsession

Link: https://www.reviewjournal.com/crime/homicides/locals-say-suspect-in-nhp-troopers-killing-had-covid-19-obsession-1996488/

I found this interesting...

“He had this paper in his hand, and he was getting really aggressive with off-the-wall stuff,” Garcia said, adding that Dabritz had thrown himself down in a chair, “talking about the virus comes from the sewers, and his wife was some famous scientist.”

His ex-wife, Haydee Dabritz, is an epidemiologist in California. The woman told the Las Vegas Review-Journal that her ex-husband was a research scientist in the 1980s, before he was diagnosed with bipolar disorder.

During the March 4 encounter, another water district employee, Kurt Carson, asked the man if he was sick. “Yes,” Dabritz replied, according to Garcia. “You probably shouldn’t be in public,” Garcia recalled telling the man.
+++++++
Just over a week later, that encounter in the water district office would come up again, while Dabritz was hospitalized at William Bee Ririe Hospital in Ely.

According to a hospital employee, who spoke to the Review-Journal on the condition of anonymity, Dabritz first came to the hospital for issues unrelated to his mental health. But he soon was placed on a legal mental health hold, after he began wandering the halls, and he brought a “concerning” note to the nurses’ station, according to the employee, who works in a clinical position.

This happened out in the sticks near the NV/UT border, south of I-80 near Ely.

What is a "legal mental health hold"?.......

9. Due to his continuous threatening behavior he should have been incarcerated.

This nation has failed in dealing with mental illness and, in cases like his,
mandatory confinement is necessary.
