Navy says it can't empty Roosevelt amid coronavirus because of its weapons, nuclear reactor

Source: USA Today

Deirdre Shesgreen and Tom Vanden Brook

WASHINGTON – The coronavirus outbreak aboard the USS Theodore Roosevelt escalated Wednesday as more sailors tested positive for the virus and U.S. Navy officials scrambled to respond to the desperate evacuation plea from the aircraft carrier's captain.

As of midday Wednesday, 93 crew members had tested positive for the virus, and 593 tested negative, Thomas Modly, acting Secretary of the Navy, told reporters during a briefing Wednesday. There are approximately 5,000 crew members on board.

"None of them are seriously ill," Modly said.

He said 24% of the crew, or about 1,200 sailors, had been tested so far, and Navy officials were trying to take hundreds of sailors off the ship for isolation and monitoring.

I can't imagine that a complex ship like an aircraft carrier could ever be completely without crew. There are all kinds of systems that need observation and maintenance.

The Sailors on the Teddy Rose are NOT THE ONLY people in the entire NAVY who can "man" that ship, FFS.

This is some of the most outrageous BULLSHIT I've heard in years.

Dock that boat. Get the sick off. If they need to, the Seebees can erect a tent city hospital on Guam.

But to say that they cannot swap out crew members is TOTAL BULLSHIT, people.

Either they're stupid or they think that we are. Anybody who has ever served on ship knows that this is GASLIGHTING at its finest.

a nuclear sub and an aircraft carrier. Both had two crews. One on board and anther on shore. That was many years ago so I don’t know if that’s still the case but there have to be extras. And as far as a hospital, there’s an Air Force base on Guam.

Yes, subs have TWO crews: a Gold crew and a Blue crew, one serves on the boat and the other is either in training or upgrading new systems for when the boat comes back to port.

not on a scale or type that would accommodate hundreds of crewmen in a pandemic. I recall years ago, in some foreign crisis (maybe the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami), folks criticized Bush for sending two carriers to the area, until it was noted that they had on-board hospitals.

that is interesting........To the extreme conspiracy people, they might just think it's another part of Putin's master plan......

Think about it.......FIVE THOUSAND sailors needed to staff an air craft carrier, all living and needing to work in close quarters to each other.............

It's like a Cruise Ship situation on Steroids...The only thing worse would be on a submarine, but they only have a crew of 100....

customers.

Yes, Covid-19 CAN kill anyone of any age, but primarily it kills older people, or people with one or more co-morbidities, once the health care system is too overwhelmed to do anything about it.

It becomes a VERY big deal when there's too many people deathly ill to help.

They are evacuating most of the ship, leaving a skeleton crew.

this population with ordinary civilians of the same age. Presumably the Navy crew lives under more controlled conditions, which is to say no vaping, an energy supporting healthy diet that is not 60% junk food, and they are in good physical condition. Let's hope that carries them well.

Not in the whole history of the Navy have they had a planning group think of what to do in case of contagious disease on board? I mean, what?

"acting Secretary of the Navy." Yeah, Trump fired the last guy for telling him to pound sand. Tra la.
