Trump sends cease, desist letter on ad featuring one giant sound bite of his mad coronavirus musings

Source: daily kos

Wednesday March 25, 2020 · 9:03 PM CDT

Donald Trump is angry. The Democratic Super PAC Priorities USA assembled an ad that features the sound bites of Trump and Trump only, and guess what? Turns out he’s an unhinged maniacal liar who’s gotten everything about the coronavirus wrong. That may not be news to you, but it is apparently news to Trump. And his dangerously factless musings on the coronavirus over the past several weeks have not worn well.

So on Wednesday, a Trump campaign attorney released a cease and desist letter demanding that TV stations across the nation pull the ad immediately. “On behalf of Donald J. Trump for President, Inc., President Trump’s principal campaign committee, this letter notifies you that your station is airing a patently false, misleading, and deceptive advertisement,” wrote Alex Cannon, special counsel to Donald J. Trump for President, Inc. “Because [the] ad’s central point is deliberately false and misleading, your station has an obligation to cease and desist from airing it immediately to comply with FCC licensing requirements, to serve the public interest, and to avoid costly and time-consuming litigation.” .........

WASHINGTON, DC - OCTOBER 01: U.S. President Donald Trump calls journalists 'loco,' which is Spanish for crazy, during a press conference to discuss a revised U.S. trade agreement with Mexico and Canada in the Rose Garden of the White House on October 1, 2018 in Washington, DC. U.S. and Canadian officials announced late Sunday night that a new deal, named the 'U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement,' or USMCA, had been reached to replace the 24-year-old North American Free Trade Agreement. 1. So, this is Trump's legal argument

The words that Trump spoke in public cannot be rebroadcast if he says something different at a later date.

Makes sense.

If you're an idiot.

That's like in 2008, when facing foreclosure from Deutshce Bank, Trump Organization sued them, alleging that the bank was responsible for the the recession that was keeping them from paying the bank loan.

Our back is already against the wall. There is no option to retreat, only to fight tooth and nail, or lay down.

litter she and HW spawned.....I remember when I saw that C-word saying that on national TV and my jaw hit the floor. I thought, that matriarchal TWAT's statement should be deserving of the guiltoine? just like the "let them eat cake" but even more horrific.

That one comment, is the epitome of the Republican Party since 1980, and has taken on the even more un-fathomable ugliness of every single Republican across the nation with every day since. It has now reached a crescendo.

What an incredibly despicable group of people who aren't the least bit fit for being in society. The entire group of Republicans are proving that they are indeed a giant threat to all humanity, not just us in the United States, but around the entire globe.

They know, that Democrats are not prone to violence. If the tables were turned, and democrats even said crap one thousandth this despicable their fucked up, mentally deranged, dim-witted, followers would have wiped our asses off the face of the earth in short order.........Seriously

There is something horrifically pathological about the Republicans ignorance. Just look at one of their gun nuts followers, going to a family owned pizza place with an assault weapon because some right wing lunatic told the public that Hillary was running a child sex ring out of the basement of that business. How fucking insane is that??????????

Could that be the same campaign committee that spread hundreds of lies and deceptions on the air during his 2015/2016 campaign?

So, a rational person would conclude......

Our Democratic Party needs to set up a PAC just to send out cease and desist demand letters every time Trump's campaign airs an ad in 2020 containing a lie or deception.

That would be quite a busy operation!

The news media will dig into it and there is no way Trump will come off looking good when the US is poised to pass Italy & China today with the most infections while being way behind in per capita testing.

In the next 2-3 weeks, the numbers will speak for themselves and eradicate debate on Trump's poor performance.

53. Sounds like a cue for action for us!

The ad needs to go viral. And with so many of us practicing social distancing from home, we can do our part.

Copy the ad's link on YouTube and give it the widest dissemination: social media, email, text message, whatever. Let's make the hit-counter spin fast enough to push it to the top of YouTube's featured videos menu.

58. Give me a break. This statement ...

... comply with FCC licensing requirements, to serve the public interest, and to avoid costly and time-consuming litigation.”

Fox News should be stripped of their FCC license violating the requirement to serve the public interest by repeating Pendejo45 lies for 2 months!

This ad only highlights what Pendejo45 said. By stating that it violates to serve the public interests FCC requirement means he’s admitting that everything he’s said about coronavirus was against the public interest.

How stupid can he be?

he is claiming he did not say what he said despite the irrefutable proof he said it. If you say you did not say something does that mean you did not say it? Where are you when we need you Rene Descartes?

75. I say, LET the bastard sue

The defense will then be entitled to conduct discovery, which involves subpoenaing him, putting him under oath and asking him if he really did say all these things we have multiple proofs he did say them.

If he says he did...case dismissed, and we’ve got an even better campaign ad to use against him.

If he says he didn’t...case still dismissed (because it is easily proved that he said them, the law basically says having mean things said about you is part of the price of being a public figure, and if a president really could sue someone for defamation that big building on Fifth Avenue would now be named “Obama Tower”) and we have an ironclad way to get rid of him because the Fucking Republicans have decided lying under oath is an impeachable offense.

77. I think it is a mistake to laugh off his threat.

The core message here is that he wants to make the idea of a weaponized FCC something that becomes debatable...not absurd.

We have come to accept as fact that the DOJ is no longer independent. We have come to accept that the executuve is not bound courts and Congress.

How long until the press and free speech are victims of this wannabe dictator?

It starts with granting equal gravitas to lies cloaked in a framework of "fair and balanced". Another cornerstone of liberty is about to be put on the table for debate. He controls so many levers of power right now, that the unthinkable may become just another political football. If the 2018 midterms had not wrestled the House back, his authoritarian agenda would have progressed further.

86. The only POSSIBLE - and extremely flimsy - argument in favour of this C&D letter is...

...the text added at the end is editorializing, and not objective fact. (Even though it is.) Beyond that, he doesn't have a leg to stand on.

Even giving that one second an undeserved examination, it is glaringly self-evident that EVERY country "needs a leader it can trust."

Trying to turn this into a legal argument is ridiculous, and counter-productive to his ends. All he's doing is bringing attention to his lies, and, in effect, claiming they are, in fact false and actionable.

I smell Rudy's handiwork here.

87. For a minute there, I thought the claim was referring to Fox News.

It was the words “patently false, misleading, and deceptive.”

With this rationale, we need lawyers to send a cease-and-desist letter to Fox with the same justification as for this ad, “your station has an obligation to cease and desist from airing it [misleading information] immediately to comply with FCC licensing requirements, to serve the public interest.”

92. He Doesn't Have Any Kind Of Case

It isn’t like the Ad makes up things about Twitler they play just the inane things he said.

You called it a “Democrat” Hoax, said the cases would dwindle from 15 to 12 ....to 0. Said it would just go away. You said no one could ever imagine such a thing. All dead wrong or a lie.

So you dug your own grave Drumpf. You don’t have a fat leg to stand on.

You are dumb and you are a serial liar. You are by far the worst President ever.....and we’ve had some below par ones.

You are the best reason yet to deep six the Electoral College.
