Majority of Americans now say they approve of Trump's handling of coronavirus: poll

Last edited Fri Mar 20, 2020, 11:53 AM - Edit history (1)

Source: TheHill

The majority of Americans now approve of President Trump's handling of the coronavirus pandemic, a change from just one week prior, according to a new Ipsos/ABC News poll.

Of those surveyed, 55 percent said that they approved of the president's handling of the situation, while 43 percent said they disapproved. The numbers were basically reversed from one week ago when 54 percent said they disapproved and 43 percent approved.

Trump's tone and approach to the outbreak has changed in recent weeks, with the president now appearing at daily briefings at the White House with his coronavirus task force. Trump said this week that he knew that COVID-19 was a pandemic before it was labeled as such by the World Health Organization, despite his previous rhetoric downplaying the severity of the virus.

The president has passed two coronavirus stimulus packages that include paid sick leave for certain workers and free coronavirus testing.

Despite the improvement in the approval rating, the public remains strongly partisan.

Nearly 70 percent of Democrats still disapprove of how Trump is dealing with the pandemic, while 92 percent of Republicans approve of how he's handled the crisis.

There are over 14,000 confirmed cases of the virus in the U.S. with at least 200 deaths, according to data from Johns Hopkins University.

Trump gave the enemy three months' lead time to inflict its worst upon us and STILL isn't giving medical professionals the full support they need to combat COVID-19. "Wartime president" my ass. He's almost as useless now as he was during the Vietnam era.

who was a master at this. Did nothing, big problem ensued. Ran around making big noise about this godawful mess he had to deal with. Managed to do a little something to make it less bad, ran around touting his tiny success against massive odds. Congratulations all around.

You had to be working with him to see what he did, because if you weren't you didn't realize that the big mess was the result of his not solving a small problem before it got huge and ugly. The people who never had a mess because they solved problems beforehand never had a chance.

trump appeared still not to take the crisis as seriously, as the last week, where he appeared to take it more seriously

Approvals are a very inaccurate volatile measure of things.

Yesterday's press conference where he was contradicted by the FDA, press, and people on the front line I suspect would give a different approval poll

You asked the right question

Checks will take weeks or months to get out, exacerbated by the Senate's dithering

Hospitals will be swamped in days, no PPE, still not nearly enough tests

The tests we do have will increase the reported infection rate dramatically

48. Some of those polled may soon be dead.

Trump's con-man act is at work, convincing people he's on top of the system when he's doing squat. He's claiming credit for legislation initiated in Pelosi's House. He's signing something he says is based on a 1950s law giving him extraordinary powers to get desperately needed medical equipment (respirators, protective clothing and masks, testing kits), and then doing nothing with it. He's telling the governors, "You're on your own," and telling people with symptoms they can't get tested while celebrities and athletes can because, "Life's like that."

Four people in one family have died from the disease, and the remaining three are in intensive care. That's not "completely under control." What really irks me, however, is how Fat Donnie is revising history to say he knew it was a pandemic before anyone else.

Yes, we had a perfect plan but Democrats — as they always do — it’s all they can do. They have no plan, they have no leaders, they’re pitiful really. But we’re winning. We’re doing great stuff, tremendous stuff — stuff like no pandemic has ever seen before. And we will win. We will. Already the rest of the world is looking at us and saying great things about what we’re doing. ...”

I'd read this as approval based on his change in demeanor and/or attitude. It's quite likely this is going to go on for a long time. Does this wind up changing people's attitudes like 9/11 did for W? We're going to find out over the next several months. There are more pressing issues right now and in the coming months. Remember, a leopard can't change its spots (and this goes for most Republicans; their "philosophy" won't let them be reasonable during times of crisis). Their actions over the next several months will feed into people's decision come November.

55% will believe anything as long as the person saying it has an upbeat demeanor and attitude.

Hospitals are prepared. Everyone is getting tested. Millions of masks are being provided to doctors. Hospital ships are en route to hot zones. There's a "game-changing" drug that the FDA is looking to approve.

It's reassuring to hear. It's no surprise that his approval rating has gone up.

But this is Trump we're talking about here. If what we're seeing him do now falls in line with everything else he's done as president -- which it surely does -- then it's all bullshit.

Hospitals aren't prepared. Hardly anybody is getting tested. There are no masks. There are no hospital ships. There's no game-changing drug that will be available any moment now.

Someone earlier posted about how this reminded them of the Katrina aftermath with Bush going on about what a heckuva job his administration was doing -- it wasn't until the unavoidable reality of the situation sunk in that people realized how bad he'd fucked it up.

34. Trump is playing this

like a master politician. It is working, whether we want to admit it or not. Those poll numbers are probably accurate. There is tremendous power in being in front of the people every day, surrounded by adoring professional staff, telling us how to save ourselves and attempting to look presidential. Advertising sells!

Donald Trump will be in front of the people, when this thing burns out, controlling the message and taking full credit for the virus' defeat. His message will be, that he alone, through his genius and courage saved the nation. Biden's message will be lost in the background noise of the crowd cheering Make America Great Again.

The worst part, in the end, as always, it will be the winners who write the history.

On a side note, one of the football forums I sometimes post to his rabid base has already thrown him under the bus after claiming he knew all along this was going to be a pandemic. That's a base that hangs on his every word and that word was a true whopper and they called him out on it in spades....so there is good news in the world.

The latest figures include 35% who Strongly Approve of the job Trump is doing and 42% who Strongly Disapprove. This gives him a Presidential Approval Index rating of -7.

The poll is ABC News. Not GOP leaning, it falls pretty much in the middle.

Oh, yeah.

I mean, look at this poll.

78. Among 502 of 'em, I guess so.

That's really small sample size. It looks like comparing Iowa to NH rather than a sample that is more representative of the whole US population... for example.

50. There is something...

There is something seriously wrong with that!

Reality seems to be very divorced from the beliefs people are holding, if that poll is correct.

However, reality and what is actual will win in that disconnect and it will probably be all the more unpleasant and shocking as a result of being so deluded about a crisis.

51. Not a surprise-- he's been taking active steps to help with the crisis for about a week

He will get credit for that. He will also get blame for delaying--but many don't understand the damage that his inaction will have caused. Bush senior was a wartime President got very high favorability. I expect his ratings to go up in the short term.

I took a course called How to Lie with Statistics. Of course, that was 48 years ago. But I remember it and that's why I will discount all this poll BS about Americans and trump and how Senator Feinstein should be Frankenized etc, etc, etc.

And you think the sky is falling. Wait for other polls. This poll does not jive with other polls. Rasmussen only has him at 46% approval and they lean heavily Republican.

84. This has zero to do with his approval rating

The question on this poll was how is Trump handling Civid-19. He got high marks unfortunately. That doesn't mean they approve of Trump on other things. He's roughly 43-44% on average.

reality is about to slap the shit out of them.

The numbers are increasing exponentially. We as humans do NOT understand that on a basic level. The cases are following a log curve right now - when the numbers stop increasing by hundreds and go to 1000s or 10,000s, or 100,000s then things will get bad. really bad.

82. The majority of Americans

don't sit around and listen to or watch three hours a day of coronavirus coverage. They can barely make it through the evening news, those who still watch it. They get their information on the fly, or from late-night talk show monologues, and they are not informed enough to realize that there's been a change in tone.

Trump's handlers were smart to get the coronavirus task force to assemble daily with boring Pence as the leader, then when last Tuesday's election left the news, then they had convinced Trump to change strategy on this, and appear presidential in front of that group.

85. Right, his handlers made the right call for once. Not for a minute...

did I think it was that orange, dumb ass's idea to switch from calling it a Democratic hoax to saying he knew it was a pandemic all along.

His dumb but cunning ass latched onto the tone-change idea because he somehow sensed his hoax hype wasn't going to work long-term.

Fortunately for us though there are plenty of videos of him spewing the "virus-is-a-hoax" line that we can use for effective negative ads as the election nears.

86. They found him in a vulnerable moment

Even he couldn't sell his own bullshit a week ago, and the economy is his Achilles heel. They concocted a strategy to maybe pull his ass out of the wringer, telling him that by the election everything would be back to normal, and he'd get the credit for it.

89. That's their thinking, but the virus curve may have flattened by...

November but the near-totally unprecedented shutdown of out economy is going to take years to bounce back from. There will still be many shuttered businesses, unemployment, foreclosures, depleted 401ks and even food insecurity—a full-on recession come November, for trump and his handlers to overcome.

83. They have convinced themselves the Coronavirus is coming over our southern border.

Some crazy right-wing woman was going on about it today on Facebook. She was ranting about the illegals carrying the virus into our country and taking up beds and ventilators that should be going to real Americans. Trump is a hero to them because he has closed the southern border. In reality, of course, it is Mexico that should be closing the border against US citizens, because, so far, they have very few cases whereas the US has many, many cases.

92. No surprise

He is appearing on TV everyday with mainly reasonable people, and there is no *opposition*. It is like 911. It would be politically foolhardy for Democrats to criticize what he has done so far. The press also have to be careful not to come off looking like jerks. I saw some kind of PSA the other day, and if you didn't know him, you would say it was impressive.

We will see how it plays out politically. And compared to the crisis, I couldn't care less.

93. Much of America feels isolated enough to watch the other half go to hell

Many younger folks just see it as a bad cold. Some just think "glad it isn't us". And for some, like after 9/11, there's the LIHOP crowd who think it's God's scourge on globalist, big-city, left-wing, free-living blue states better off without. Wait until the full economic disaster begins to kick in.
