US extends travel restrictions to UK and Ireland as Trump discourages travel due to coronavirus

Source: CNBC

The U.S. will add the U.K. and Ireland to travel sweeping restrictions as the coronavirus spreads, President Donald Trump said Saturday, discouraging the American public from unnecessary travel.

Trump earlier this week announced that foreigners who have been in 26 European countries over the last two weeks won’t be allowed in to the U.S. for 30 days. Vice President Mike Pence said the rules will take effect midnight Monday.

Airlines have scrambled to slash flights amid the pandemic and unprecedented travel restrictions to stop it crushes demand. Air cargo and ocean freight are exempt from the rules. The new ban the entry on foreigners who have been in the U.K. and Ireland take effect at midnight on Monday.

Speaking at a coronavirus briefing on Saturday, Trump said further travel restrictions, possibly within the United States, from places with high numbers of cases, is possible.

6. You would think it would be reciprocal.

But it is unclear what the UK strategy is at the moment. Which might be part of the reason for the ban.

2. I guess it's easier just to institute blanket bans than to implement actual screening at immigration

I agree in general travel ought to be limited, but everyone has different situations.

5. You are right

It is not very effective to screen at immigration.

4. Unfortunately, too many people believe the build-those-walls propaganda.

I was just talking with a family member who admits that Trump is crazy but still believes all the Faux Noise talking points.

7. Those who can afford it will findcways

Mainly, I think, they’ll find flights from countries get are not blocked or come in from Canada or Mexico or via Asia. That’s the problems with bans and walls. There are ways around them.
