Source: ABC News
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced it's been alerted to the first manufacturing shortage of an unnamed drug, due to a viral coronavirus outbreak that began in China and has now reached American soil.
FDA Commissioner Stephen Hahn said the agency has been "closely monitoring" the medical product supply chain "with the expectation" that the outbreak of the novel coronavirus would "likely" have an impact.
"A manufacturer has alerted us to a shortage of a human drug that was recently added to the drug shortages list," Hahn said in a statement Thursday night. "The manufacturer just notified us that this shortage is related to a site affected by coronavirus. The shortage is due to an issue with manufacturing of an active pharmaceutical ingredient used in the drug."
"It is important to note that there are other alternatives that can be used by patients," he added. "We are working with the manufacturer as well as other manufacturers to mitigate the shortage. We will do everything possible to mitigate the shortage

(31 posts)As someone who uses a specific brand of insulin, while other brands cause infusion site issues, I reserve the right to panic. No reason for that yet, though.
At the higher level, Ive been predicting for years that it wouldnt take much to disrupt our global supply chain. Not pleased to discover Im right.

(26,026 posts)write the prescription for about 1 more vial a month than I use so I probably have enough to last me an extra one to two months.
About the only sticking point would be the cartridges and infusion kits but worse case there is i have to go back to injections.

(251 posts)Lots of insulin is now made in Puerto Rico and is not a medicine that has impact on viral infections so hopefully any shortage is unlikely.

(1,200 posts)I fear the impact of contaminated drugs is going to be horrific. I've looked up many generic drug companies, on FDA, in Asian countries and have been appalled at the number of companies that have been given warnings by the FDA for unsanitary manufacturing conditions. This was all before the coronavirus ever started. There were some generics that I would not even take because of these warnings. Very little oversight at those places. Think of how many generics from possible unsafe companies are coming into the US and being taken by millions of us. Oh, this scares the hell out of me.

The very rich will get the first vaccines and best treatment.
The rest of us will get face masks made in China.
