Sudan will pay $30 million to families of USS Cole attack victims, its leaders say

Source: CNN

(CNN) — Sudan will pay a $30 million settlement to the families of 17 US Navy sailors killed in the 2000 bombing of the USS Cole in a bid to get itself removed from the United States' list of state sponsors of terrorism, Sudanese officials said.

Sudan's government "explicitly denies" its involvement in the attack and says the payout announced Wednesday is intended to "settle the historical allegations of terrorism left by the former regime." The country's longtime President Omar al-Bashir was ousted in a military coup in April following a lengthy popular uprising.

Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok said the agreement was made "to meet the conditions set by the US administration to remove Sudan from the list of state sponsors of terrorism in order to normalize relations with the United States and the rest of the world."

The Cole was attacked by suicide bombers in a small boat filled with explosives while refueling in the port of Aden in Yemen. The attack also wounded 39 sailors.

USS Cole bombing: Sudan agrees to compensate families

Sudan has agreed to compensate the families of 17 US sailors who died when their ship, the USS Cole, was bombed by al-Qaeda at a port in Yemen in 2000.

This is a key condition set by the US for Sudan to be removed from its list of state sponsors of terrorism.

The US ruled Sudan was responsible for the attack as the two suicide bombers involved were trained in the country.

Removal from the US blacklist would allow sanctions to be lifted, a major objective of Sudan's new government.

4. Most likely the answer is both.

Money goes to the wall. He hires contractors that are friends of his. They give him a kickback for the work. The truth never comes out, but even if it does, Senate Republicans won’t hold him accountable as long as he’s “owning the libs”.
Everyone wins, except for the American taxpayer.

3. The US should demand the same from Saudi Arabia

to compensate the 9/11 families and the families of the sailors killed in Pensacola.
