The officer responsible for US Navy special-operations forces will step down from his position, according to The Intercept.
Rear Adm. Collin Green's retirement follows the controversial court-martial of Special Warfare Operator Chief Eddie Gallagher.
President Donald Trump, who supported Gallagher, disagreed with Green's pursuit of a peer review for Gallagher's case.

Special Warfare Rear Adm. Collin Green, commander of Naval Special Warfare Command, will retire in September.
.................................
............................
His retirement follows the controversial court-martial of Special Warfare Operator Chief Eddie Gallagher, after which Green moved to withdraw Gallagher's Trident pin, which signifies his membership in the Navy SEAL community.
Green personally ordered an "ability" and "ethics" peer evaluation of Gallagher, who was previously demoted and charged with war crimes, including the murder of an ISIS prisoner of war and the shooting of two people in Iraq in 2017. Gallagher was acquitted on both counts but convicted on a lesser charge of posing for a picture with the dead ISIS fighter....................................................

(4,341 posts)I applaud this commander for resigning, mostly if he did because of disagreements with the con but...if when he joins society as a regular citizen he does not talk fully and explains why the con must be removed from office then his actions are nothing, he has not performed the ultimate sacrifice as today's sacrifices go, to go out and say everything, make sure you interview with the right people and suffer the consequences from tweet attacks from a delusional asshole.
One more thing, retiring and not talking is what would be dictators want, this is nothing but dismantling the military of good patriotic men/women and placing the incompetent and unpatriotic in places of power to do the con's bad deeds. That is what Chavez, Kim Jun Un, Putin, and all other dictators have done, they get rid of the good people and appoint "yes" people to those posts. This gets more dangerous on a daily basis.

(10,072 posts)To take away his retirement, someone has to convene a court martial.
Retired officers are still under the UCMJ which includes the offense of showing contempt to federal officials.
But no retired military person has ever been found guilty under this article of the UCMJ. There was one junior officer prosecuted about 100 years ago but he was found not guilty.
If the Admiral is eligible for retirement, which he probably is because you have over 20 years when you become an Admiral, Trump has to take him to a court martial even if he is active duty.
And a court martial means the officer is allowed to present evidence. I don't think Trump wants that.

(23,283 posts)Does he need to stay until September to qualify for retirement at a certain grade? If so, I doubt Trump will let him serve that long. Trump is too vindictive to let a non-sycophant retire with dignity.

(58,442 posts)His rank is already set by Congressional commission.
The delay is more a of time to find and brief his replacement thing.

(23,283 posts)So, an O-8 has to serve as O-8 for three years before retirement, or he'd probably be retired as O-7.
His replacement thing (or a selection pool) has probably already been identified, even before he announced his plans. And the "acting replacement thing" has been training and educating for some time already. Maybe the Marine Corps runs a little leaner, and may have to leave a command open while picking replacements. It may not be as flush with excess brass as the other branches.

(5,584 posts)I listen to a podcast where a (recently) former Navy SEAL interviews him for nearly 3 hours. The podcaster is prominent within the SEAL community, knows a lot of people involved, and the reaction was much less confrontational that has been insinuated elsewhere in the media.

(9,883 posts)A news story reminded me this morning of the corruption and violence in Mexico, a country whose national government has often been utterly corrupt and a country where lawlessness in many areas has become the norm. As the Republican Party moves our own government into utter corruption and lawlessness from Trump on down to state officials who cheat to win, and where police in many areas feel free to murder minorities without consequences, I wonder how long it will take for the US to become like its southern neighbor.
We have been losing far too many of those in government who could be relied on to hold the fort. We might not have agreed with their politics, but we believed that they would not betray the country. The purge of honorable people is almost complete, including at the National Archives and throughout every government agency where documents that would have told the story of this corrupt administration have purposely been destroyed, including important scientific data. Erasing history is one way of denying proof of the corruption. There will be no real history of this administration. We know that Republicans and Trump supporters will not care. They are perfectly fine with autocracy and the installation of the Republican Party as the permanent rulers of the country.

Terrible thing to say when the primaries just started
But he has to know he'll go to jail if he loses 2020 so he'll be pulling out all the stops with a Senate unwilling to remove or stop him.

Think about that. You never hear of Trump and Miller locking horns over anything. They must walk hand in hand to work every morning; just two white supremacists spending another day fucking over anyone who doesn't look just like them.
