Rush Limbaugh announces he has advanced lung cancer

Source: New York Daily News

Rush Limbaugh, the loudmouthed conservative radio host, announced on his show Monday that he has been diagnosed with advanced lung cancer.

The 69-year-old “The Rush Limbaugh Host” said he has begun treatment for the cancer, but didn’t go into details.

“There are going to be days that I’m not going to be able to be here,” he said on the show.

Limbaugh launched his career as a DJ on a Pennsylvania radio station in 1971 and continued moving up the food chain, including joining New York’s WABC in 1988, just before the Republican National Convention.

40. I think he moved on to e-cigarettes, from his on-air remarks.

I remember him mocking some woman on air who had complained about his consumption of a tobacco product indoors after a golf game. He had responded that his method of consumption did not violate the law and described himself in a way that sounded to me like he was an obnoxious boor. Of course, nothing unusual there.

and showed him with his trademark fat cigar, smoked halfway down.

178. You said it!

I wish the man no ill, but I have no reason to give him more compassion than he's given the countless other human beings that he's vilified and made the brunt of his hateful lies. Except that I'm a Democrat, and that's what makes me different from him because I typically care about my fellow living creatures.

In some way, I have to wonder if the universe is not starting to correct the balance between good and evil in some ways... and I will leave that correction to the universe at large.

192. I had posted it elsewhere

but I'm happy to do it again because many may not have seen this. It is his reaction to Michael J Fox's having made a political statement that Rush did not agree with.

So, he doesn't just "argue" the case - he goes low.

I'm with you - I'll never wish anyone harm or ill - but, to quote Mark Twain:

“I've never wished a man dead, but I have read some obituaries with great pleasure.”

86. Can't. I certainly can't claim I was worthy to "cast the first stone."

I certainly don’t wish lung cancer on anyone.

But I do get how some will want to celebrate the bad fortune of a mighty pain-giver. After all, he’s always been first (and loudest) in line to celebrate when our side faced adversity. And he’d revel in rubbing it in. And that generates a TON of pain and hostility and negativity and intolerance and just plain old mean-spiritedness, and a wish to see the “favor” returned.

It takes my mind to many comments, quotes, and descriptions of the trumpets and why they love and celebrate trump and hate us. How they love him because of the mere fact that he makes us miserable. That’s how much they hate US. And they delight and damn near dance in the street when we’re hurt or saddened or insulted or made to suffer in some way by what he’s sad and/or done. The whole “I drink liberals’ tears” thing - which I’m hearing and seeing and reading quite frequently now.

And all I can ask, again, is “what does that say about THEM?”

Pretty sad. Pretty pathetic.

135. I cannot call you out, if I write what I am thinking I would be called out.

You are doing OK. Some people deserve compassion but to deserve that you had to have had compassion for others, and this guy has never had any, on the contrary, through his vitriol he has helped change the landscape to what we have now, not a pretty site.

I feel Karma got to him, I feel that all the hate he has shouted all these years have accumulated and he can shove his golden microphone up his ass. I am sure they will bury him with it.

His Wiki page says...

Ed Rollins stated in the 2008 documentary Boogie Man: The Lee Atwater Story:
[Atwater] was telling this story about how a Living Bible was what was giving him faith and I said to Mary [Matalin], "I really, sincerely hope that he found peace". She said, "Ed, when we were cleaning up his things afterwards, the Bible was still wrapped in the cellophane and had never been taken out of the package", which just told you everything there was. He was spinning right to the end.

He was a evil bastard until his last breath.

30. Oddly enough

I actually heard his very first show back in 1988 - which was on his flagship 770 WABC in NYC (that we can pick up here in Philly). The noon slot was originally filled by Lynn Samuels and she was booted to a different slot and studio when he came on. Doesn't seem like it's been 32 years but it has.

157. I remember when Franken published that book

Limbaugh had a staff that used to produce SNL-like "commercials" that lampooned some of the more notable "liberals" - a favorite subject being Jessie Jackson. His show started up the year after the FCC abolished the "Fairness Doctrine", so at the time, there were still some shows with "liberal/progressive" points of view on the air. But that abolishment eventually lead to shows pairing "conservative vs liberal" (like Hannity & Colmes" and "Batchelor & Alexander" ), which became de riguer in a manner that mimicked CNN's "Crossfire", until they eventually eliminated even that format and went full-on RW loon, both live and syndicated. The deregulation of the airwaves finished liberal programming off for good when the RW bought thousands of AM radio stations and put the loon programming on them - with one group using Limbaugh as as an anchor and others using Beck or Levin as an anchor. It has been an ugly 30 years and it forced me to get a subscription back in 2007, to (then- ) XM radio, now SiriusXM, to finally hear some kind of liberal/progressive programming.

In essence, he eventually became the mouthpiece for the GOP with the insanity of Gingrich and their "revolution" mustering their troops for a full-on assault on all sensibility, subsequently leading to the teabaggers for 2010.

It is bizarre how far they have all fallen throwing their gawd Ronald Raygun under the bus.

253. Rush Limbaugh Is a Big Fat Idiot: And Other Observations

The book "Rush Limbaugh Is a Big Fat Idiot: And Other Observations" was first lent to me by a military vet that I worked with, shortly after it was published in '99. I started reading it over lunch, and had zero productivity for that afternoon and the next day until I finished it.

The book is still available, new or used (and maybe at your library). If you haven't read it recently (or ever) you need to grab a copy. I'm going to dig up mine and re-read it for the memories.

At the same time this book came out I worked with a bunch of Ditto heads that actually got a large office together, just so they could listen to his show. It was nice that they self-quarantined themselves to slow the spread of the poison. The guy who organized it all was (and is) a good friend. I used to email him Michael Moore's missives, back when you got that sort of thing though Usenet or email. It really pissed him off. We would bitch each other out over lunch (I mean have constructive discussions), or any time we visited each others office, but we had mutual respect and a lot of common ground, and it never hurt our friendship or working relationship.

I honestly felt bad for Limbaugh when he announced his hearing loss, but then I found out why. I still felt sympathy for him as a drug addict. That is terrible affliction for anyone, regardless of their class, but I had no respect for him because he was such a hypocrite for how he portrayed fellow drug addicts.

And then there was the time that he was detained by federal agents after a return from the Dominican Republic for "R&R" with drugs not prescribed to him. Specifically, Viagra. A popular R&R drug.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prostitution_in_the_Dominican_Republic

Again, look at his history. I don't take any joy in what he is and will go through. But it somehow seems fitting. He was a cancer on our society and damaged it "bigly".

272. Don't need a book. I listened to the show for quite some time until I had had enough

I remember events such as his announcing his hearing loss (due to Rheumatoid arthritis in the ear bone joints - one of my sisters has RA) and remember when he moved out of NYC and down to Florida to a compound where he did his broadcasts... And I also remember when Poppy was first running for re-election and Limbaugh "announced" that he "wasn't" supporting him, causing all sorts of a stir in conservative land.

I remember his EIB would sue stations that bucked the syndication time slot format, where he stipulated that his show MUST air in a "noon - 3 pm" slot (and one Baltimore station refused and finally started breaking the grip).

And yes he has had all sorts of "affluenza" criminal run-ins including the pills, but not just Viagra - the biggy was Oxcontin.

I remember he used to bring on guest hosts like black conservative and anti-affirmative action nut Ward Connerly as well as pseudo-economist Thomas Sowell.

The biggy was when he summarily announced that if Obama was re-elected, then he was moving to Costa Rica.

It eventually became too much as more and more RW programming took over the airwaves... But fortunately I found Joe Madison - who originally had a graveyard show here in Philly back in the late '80s and was later fired from that... But then was back on the air here years later on another station in syndication, with his show partially overlapping Limbaugh's time (Madison's show was 10 - 1pm I think). I eventually got XM radio in 2007 when I found where Madison was also being broadcast (he had originally been broadcasting in syndication with Cathy Hughe's Radio One/Syndication One programming - on both sat radio and terrestrial radio - and then eventually went completely onto satellite radio). The SiriusXM merger brought about a couple left/liberal/progressive stations that included some of the old Air America folks including Rachel... as well as other familiar voices like Bill Press and Stephanie Miller.

322. I'm sorry, but I cannot feel sympathetic towards a drug addict who at the same time supported harsh

penalties for drug addicts instead of medical help. He even pretended on air that he couldn't pronounce "Oxycontin" so it looked like he had little experience with the drug. And, of course, because he is wealthy he got off with a slap on the wrist. He should have had his broadcast license taken away. I feel the same antipathy towards secretly gay conservatives who espouse severe laws against gay people.

with supporting Hillary (with the Clintons having moved to NY - with Bill initially setting up shop in Harlem before they bought the house upstate). And when the primaries didn't go that way, she seemed to have snapped. The irony being that Obama had also been in NY, having gone to Colombia, graduated from there, and living in NYC for a few years before leaving for Chicago and later going to Harvard for law school.

I never understood why they kept her on a Left channel (XM had Air America/America Left, eventually SiriusXM Progress). I guess it was based on her past philosophy.

He's a major contributor to the mess we are in.

I no longer talk to my sister, either. We used to agree to disagree, but 2016 emboldened her to let her Fascist Freak Flag really fly. She's made it quite clear that we are the enemy. So it goes... and ditto on the flip flop.

stop alternative energy initiatives,
stop single payer,
deregulate media,
sell electronic voting machines,
stop the fla recount,

get kneeling athletes labeled unamerican,
pump up the white supremacists,
enable separation of immigrant families,
sell the wall,
religious 'equality'
sell privatization of the US mail
etc

and that's the short version

his genius is/was lying and rationalizing with royal i'm never wrong certitude that he could maintain because his call screeners hardly ever let anyone sneak in to challenge that certitude, while arranging paid callers from US and probably foreign think tanks and because he was basically invisible to those he attacked and lied about and they ignored him

and he's on 600 stations and all the talkers on those and about 1000 other stations had to follow his lead or get fired because his listeners could never get through to kiss his ring so they called the local shows to police them

this guy is ignorant and a liar and hater who used the biggest bully pulpit in the country to undermine democracy, move national wealth to billionaires, pollute the national discourse, and get people sick and killed

if republicans paid $1000/hr for political radio ads 15hrs/day, 1200 stations following limbaugh's lead would be worth about $5BIL/year FREE paid for by idiot and asshole advertisers

30 years of that was worth trillions in global warming, war, deregulation, voter suppression, crappy judges, and so on

how important Limbaugh was for leading them into this disaster and they are doomed if he’s not there to defend Trump and his defenders in the senate. If he can’t get back on the stage soon it’s the end of the Age of Limbaugh.

Hannity is nothing without Limbaugh, who’s a genius liar. A genius blowhard. They can't fill his shoes anytime soon. Limbaugh was essential for selling Trump and the Putin agenda.

All of those lesser blowhards follow the Limbaugh lead and had to or lose their jobs. hannity reinforced limbaugh. he's limbaugh's water boy and ball wiper. part of his success on radio is that he reinforced limbaugh for 25 years coming on right after him. like limbaugh a big part of their ratings was that thy were on so many stations, were ubiquitous, and those stations were often the loudest or the only stations around. advertisers had little choice.

RW talk radio, the age of limbaugh, is going to lose a lot of stations and fall apart and those senators who vote to acquit need to get that message that limbaugh won't be around to rationalize and excuse their vote for the most corrupt, ignorant, and treasonous WH occupier in history

I want Limbaugh off the air (though the stench of his evil will outlive the decay in his corpse) -just not so much like this.

However, I would not weep for his passing.

So, I'll have to fall back on my dear, departed mother's old adage: "If you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all."

Although I suppose a nice Southern style, "Well, bless his heart!" would not go amiss.

Limbaugh for a while. He was constantly reporting that if you didn't like your HMO you could just go to another one, which was a complete and utter lie. They did not accept people with "pre-existing conditions," as I found when I found when I accidentally let my health insurance lapse. He is a very wealthy man (In 2018, Forbes listed his earnings at $84.5 million), and will have no trouble at all paying for any medical expenses. I very much doubt he will suddenly experience any sympathy for those who can't pay their medical expenses. He thinks they are lazy, and he can afford it because he works so hard.

I got very angry with a coworker who asked another coworker if her mother had smoked, when the mom died of lung cancer - I asked her, if she had died of a heart attack would you have asked if she exercised? Cancer is horrible, no matter how you lived your life. I truly believe if we had spent the money we wasted on wars on finding a cure for cancer, we would have one by now. My mum died of cancer.

107. Possibly. But lung cancer treatments have advanced quite a bit in the last

few years, and he may actually do all right. For some people, it becomes a chronic disease, rather than a death sentence. I know a couple of women (from my own cancer support group) with stage IV lung cancer, and they have been plugging along for several years. It's not a fun way to live, but for the most part, they are maintaining.

Depends a lot on your general health and whether you can afford the treatments, of course.

I simply can't say anything nice about Rush Limbaugh because he knowingly and willfully did very great harm, even to my own personal life, because of his toxic influence on my parents and grandparents, Evangelical Seventh-Day Adventists, who, incomprehensibly, loved Rush Limbaugh.

It coined the term Feminazi. It laughed at Michael J. Fox and his battles with Parkinson's disease, had a song called Pres. Obama "Barack the magic negro," and he said:

Ridiculously Maddening Quote of the Day: Rush Limbaugh Blames Indians for Tobacco-related deaths.

“Let’s check the scoreboard. How many Native Americans were killed by the arrival of the white man through disease and war…how many people have died since the white man arrived due to lung cancer, thanks to the Indian custom of smoking? Who are the real killers here?…Where are our reparations? I’m just saying.”

I feel kind of like Spock did in the Star Trek revamp...when Kirk offered to assist Nero:

Spock:
Captain, what are you doing?

Kirk:
Spock, showing them compassion might go a long way to promoting peace between us and the Romulans. It's logic, I thought you'd like that.

Spock:
No, not really. Not this time.

I have no compassion for Limbaugh...if that makes me a lesser person, so be it...it's better then being a hypocrite.

I personally hope he suffers physically for all the psychological pain and misery he brought to so many...

And I have dreamed of outliving him since I first heard him in 1991. He is the Ultimate Hater. I have ZERO sympathy for him, and I shouldn't write more at this time until I calm down. Beautiful day of sunshine today here in Tampa, saw the first ever episode of The Rifleman (1958, with Dennis Hopper), and Rush may soon rot in Hell. What a day!!

...when it killed my father.

There are treatments for lung cancer that were not available a short time ago.

This asshole will have access to the world's best technology and physicians simply because he has money.

He may live.

Republicans, despite their obvious lack of a trace of ethics and morality like to pretend they believe in God. It's pretty obvious that like everything else, it's merely an affective lie.

If it happens that there is a God with punative designs, for this man there will literally be he'll to pay.

say advanced when it's 2-3. Someone here can enlighten us maybe. He also had some hearing/ear problems treated with with cochlear implants.

226. I would expect that the traditional concept...

...of "stage" to be replaced at some point by a molecular biological category, although certainly there is a factor associated with distribution of metastases.

A common place for lung cancer to metastasize is the brain, but as Limbaugh's brain is hardly an important organ, this is hardly of consequence.

He's a fool and like those he defends and emulates, he hates science because he doesn't know any. He's unaware of his ethical state and similarly likely unaware of his medical condition.

Anything he says about anything should be taken with a large grain of salt.

They include people diagnosed 11 years ago.

There have been huge, if unheralded, advances in the last ten years. The numbers are certainly higher now.

325. Yeah, lost the source

Couple key points though is that lung cancer is pretty fatal when it spread and small cell carcinoma is a death sentence. Those numbers also don't break out the survival rates for people of different ages, races and gender. Not surprisingly, older people have much lower survival rates.

338. Well, yes...

...but if you reflect on it a bit, the largest cause of death is being born.

Cancer is not even close to being a single disease, and even among people who have cancers of a specific cellular type, ie, sclc, there are variances from individual to individual, and even within an individual.

The point is that one can extend one's life considerably with modern treatments and even not overly degrade one's quality of life significantly.

If I were diagnosed, I would search the scientific literature to determine my prognosis depending on the decisions I made. I did this for my sister-in-law when she got cancer, and currently she's in remission.

In the case of my mother-in-law who apparently was developing rapid melanoma - this is relatively common in elderly people near the end of life, and as you imply seldom ends up as a cause of death as other syndromes kill them first - I was able to convince the family that any treatment for melanoma would only exacerbate suffering.

I have no use for Limbaugh of course, and the sooner his pernicious mouth is permanently silenced, the better it is for decency and humanity, but I am merely stating the general case.

I wonder if Limbaugh will ever have any kind of insight into his behavior. Maybe impending death will do it. But I doubt it. He has spent years and years doing the same show. Democrats are the enemy, the GOP are saviors. Nothing the GOP does is wrong, nothing the democrats do is right. His program is all just one big GOP commercial, and the rubes that call in are totally brainwashed by him. The damage he has done over the years is huge to our democracy. He never cared, he just wanted to spew hatred and hawk his endless crap. His website, his newsletter, even a fucking chair with "EIB" on it (excellence in broadcasting) - Rush sold it all to his fans. He even fled to Florida from New York to avoid taxes. He was always the problem, not the solution. His pandering to Trump is enough to make you throw up. Maybe his ex wife will donate some of his money once he is worm food. But shacking up with him speaks volumes about her character too.

I used to listen to him on and off back in the 90's, at first because I lived in the middle of nowhere and his show was all I could pick up, and then later because I found it important to listen to what the other side was saying. I was never a fan, never drank the Flavor-Ade, and found him to be equal parts bombastic and odious.

I can remember the last day I listened to him, and it was over 20 years ago. He started his show celebrating the death of Earth First founder Judi Bari from breast cancer. Not announcing her death, but celebrating it. Playing "Happy Days are Here Again" and "Celebrate" by Kool and the Gang in the background while cackling about her death due to breast cancer, and spreading the lie that she tried to blow herself up. It made me sick.

I thought about the kind of person I wanted to be, and I decided I didn't want to be like Limbaugh.

The harm Limbaugh has done to this nation is historic and catastrophic. We are suffering from Limbaugh's influence, and we will be suffering from it for decades to come.

207. Lung Cancer Is a Terrible Disease

Cancer and heart disease are the two leading causes of death for middle-aged adults aged 45–64, comprising 50% of all deaths in this age range.

Smoke is harmful to lung and heart health. Whether from burning wood, tobacco or marijuana, toxins and carcinogens are released from the combustion of materials. Smoke from marijuana combustion has been shown to contain many of the same toxins, irritants and carcinogens as tobacco.

Cigar smoking causes cancer of the oral cavity, larynx, esophagus, and lung. It may also cause cancer of the pancreas. Moreover, daily cigar smokers, particularly those who inhale, are at increased risk for developing heart disease and other types of lung disease.

Lung diseases caused by smoking include COPD, which includes emphysema and chronic bronchitis. Cigarette smoking causes most cases of lung cancer. If you have asthma, tobacco smoke can trigger an attack or make an attack worse. Smokers are 12 to 13 times more likely to die from COPD than nonsmokers.

He seems to "enjoy" spreading "hate and fear." Rush hurt people in many ways. The "truth" about Rush is what he has as he has as his legacy. Rush joins others in that club, but I cannot name the "others." It hurts me to think about that club.

...I wish the best to those here who have been hurt by Rush Limbaugh in one way or another. This story about Rush and cancer is hurting people now, and that could be the saddest thing that could be said.

People of all ages and types get cancer, for various reasons or for none at all, though I've never seen a bitter, angry, hate-filled 101 year old. Kindness, tolerance, cooperation, appreciation, love of humanity all foment longevity.

Anger and hatred attract malignancy. Bottled up feelings, and breeder-reactor vitriol are not good for the soul.

If I ever do get cancer, I don't want it to be because my body was damaged by self-induced hatred and anger. I would want it to be just one of those inevitable things of the universe that I could do nothing about.

The rewards of life compound each day, however one measures them. Some are well-earned satisfactions, while others are very very richly deserved.

In 1990 when GHW Bush’s campaign character assassin discovered that he was dying of cancer and went and personably apologized to everyone that may have been harmed by his dirty tactics, even Mike Dukakis who Bush defeated in the ‘88 election.
Slinging the GOP dirt for over 30 years, Rush has caused a lot of pain. He came very close to a confession in 2008 the day after Obama won claiming he was tired of carrying the GOP water but he recanted those statements the following day and fell back into the GOP line the following day.
Maybe there is still a beating heart in there somewhere.

I will not dance on his grave, but I will not shed a tear. His uncivil behavior on the radio was an early step in the decline in decorum of American society. His devaluation and mocking of good and decent people. The recent episode of "Frontline" exploring the divide in America used 2008 to start the discussion, but I felt it should have started earlier and talk radio being part of the equation.

but he had more influence on the US political system than anyone else I could think of. Without him and his later clones there would probably been no political career of Dick Cheney, Newt Gingrich, Rat snake McConnell or DJT. He made the most rotten part of conservatism mainstream and accepted. He was paid obscene amounts of money which brought another bunch of rat bastards onboard. He made cruelty and slander a false feature of being smart. When I look at the radioactive sewer of US politics, him and and his oligarch financial supporters were most responsible for the current situation.
