Coronavirus contagious even in incubation stage, China's health authority says.

Source: South China Morning Post

China’s National Health Commission (NHC) said on Sunday that the new coronavirus is contagious even in its incubation period, which lasts up to 14 days, and that the virus’ ability to spread is getting stronger.

Ma Xiaowei, the minister in charge of the NHC, told a press briefing that the authorities’ understanding of the virus was “limited” and they were also unclear on the risks posed by possible mutations.

“The outbreak is expected to continue for some time,” he said.

Since the outbreak was first reported in December, more than 2,070 people have been infected with the new coronavirus and 56 killed.

5. Too late, it's already here

I wrote yesterday that it appears to lave a long prodromal stage during which people are not ill but are contagious.

They're going to have to go back in time on this one, closing schools, closing large gatherings including religious ones as well as entertainment and corporate megameetings, prioritizing jobs, and restricting travel. A whole lot of people are going to have to start telecommuting.

Cases in the US have been Chinese travelers so far. Give it another week and a half, see if it has spread to people they came into contact with before they had any idea they were ill.

This virus is brand new, we haven't seen it in humans before. There is too much about it we don't know yet. China has been doing much of the research and their actions have been appropriate and timely. They are sharing what information they have as they discover and confirm it.

12. Yes it is too late for the arrival but no fly zone on China will mitigate in some capacity

The new infections stemming from Chinese travelers. I appreciate your optimism regarding the Chinese efforts but I fear they will act similarly to the Soviets and Chernobyl.

3. I can't help but think of that game, "Plague, Inc."

Where you create a fake virus, and the goal of the game is to kill everyone on earth. Starting in China was always a good strategy. The fact that it has spread to other countries already makes me think this one has a chance of wiping us out. But haha, maybe I'm being paranoid.

6. Best place to start is Madagascar.

Sure, it takes longer to ramp up during the initial stages, but once the world is aware of the bug, getting to Madagascar is damn near impossible.

7. True.

But laying low in China for as long as possible while you ramp up the cold and heat resistance is how I work it.

8. A virus that kills quickly isn't a good virus.

As far as a virus goes, you need a window of opportunity to spread far and wide.

What better way is there than to infect someone, and they don't get symptoms for 14 days? So there is that window of opportunity for the virus, 2 weeks to get out there and party!

I hear they are working on a vaccine. Only defense now it has spread across the globe. That, and vigilance in picking out infected people. And wearing face masks . . . and staying out of crowded places, like movie theatres, shopping centres, aeroplanes . . .

Decades ago, Australia had a rabbit plague. A virus, myxamatosis was introduced.
Turned out it was three strains, a fairly harmless one where the rabbit survived, one that killed quickly, and one that killed but had a long incubation period. Guess which strain is still around?

10. The us has a very degraded capacity to react or counter this virus....

The cdc has been ravaged by political purges, and staffing and readiness are severely degraded. It lacks leadership and staff.

Trump is all but assured to pull further resources out of CA and any urban centers as a way of punishing them (and reducing population).

I wouldn't be surprised at this point if any vaccine was extremely limited in availability and rationed per administration priorities.

You know the whacko religious zealots would applaud this.

Talk me out of it. I'd like to believe this will blow over like other pandemics manage to do.
