Naval Station Great Lakes on lockdown; all personnel instructed to take cover

Source: WGN Channel 9 Chicago

GREAT LAKES, Ill. — Naval Station Great Lakes has been placed on lockdown.

According to the naval station, the incident involving a “gate runner” happened around 7 a.m. Friday at 2601E Paul Jones Street.

Naval Station Great Lakes has instructed all personnel to “take cover in nearest building or structure” and await further instruction. Naval Station Great Lakes tells WGN someone drove through the entry control area without showing credentials and kept going. They are currently searching for driver.

All gates to the naval station are currently closed.

No injuries have been reported.

The post on Facebook reads: “RUN, HIDE, FIGHT! ALL PERSONNEL, LOCKDOWN. TAKE COVER IN NEAREST BUILDING OR STRUCTURE. AWAIT INSTRUCTION. ALL GATES ARE CLOSED. We are looking for a gate runner.”

This is a developing story. Check back for details.

There's a graduation ceremony today so it's possible it's a friend or relative of a grad who just cruised through the gate in a daze.

RHF and then tweet they should "take cover," that seems contradictory to me.

It was an employee who worked on base but who didn't follow the gate guard's instructions.

Are you serious ??? Have you been anywhere near a military base gate in the last 15 years ? They're not wearing white gloves and smiling anymore, my friend. They're armed-up and dead serious. These are not your grandad's bases, mate. They all have metal-arm gate guards and armed shore patrol there. You have to show ID to even have those gates lifted.

Anybody who "cruised through the gate" is going be doing some hard time. Accessing a military base in 2020 without the proper ID and authorization is a federal offense.

But I couldn't help but laugh at the notion that someone could just cruise through a gate at any military base.

My sister was a USMC MP who stood gate duty, and she thought this was hilarious. "As if" she said. As if . . . half of the SP wouldn't code the base, jump in their cars, pursue the driver, haul his butt out of the vehicle and, well, you get the picture.
