4.5 magnitude earthquake shakes southern Kansas

Source: AP

HUTCHINSON, Kan. (AP) ó A small earthquake was reported in southern Kansas on Sunday.

The U.S. Geological Survey said a magnitude 4.5 earthquake struck about 2 miles (3 kilometers) southwest of Hutchinson shortly after 1 p.m. The service had initially reported that it was a magnitude 4.4 earthquake, but later upgraded it. No damage was immediately reported.

The earthquake happened near where several others have happened before in Reno County, The Hutchinson News reported.

Kansas began seeing a spike in earthquakes in 2014 that were blamed on wastewater injection wells from oil and gas production. The number of quakes began tampering off after oil prices dropped and regulations were enacted.

5. Same as OK? And don't EVER expect to drink your water again. It will kill you. MAGA!!!!

The chemical toxicity from fracking is reason alone to ban it, as it has been in countries with a collective conscience and rational thought. Earthquakes are just part of the package from re-arranging the substrate.

10. FYI - Oklahoma quakes were not caused by fracking

The same industry... They were caused by wastewater injection wells.
The state imposed new rules and the earthquakes fell dramatically

14. The wastewater is a byproduct of fracking, no?

No fracking, no wastewater, no injection wells.

Studies are suggesting the earthquake will continue for 6-10 more years, albeit smaller, until things totally settle down to some sort of equilibrium.

16. Thanks. I thought I read where they had made a connection with fracking.

Wastewater injection sounds great for the aquifers too (sarcasm)..

8. Shook us up here in NE Kansas too.

I did not feel it or notice it, was busy as hell about that time but others here around me lost pictures off the walls.

I was awakened by one several years ago. The dogs popped up, the cats all stood up and I woke up to hear it then feel it. Over in a flash but apparently we have quite a few around here these days. Felt a good one in Honduras but Kansas quakes, so far, have been fairly calm up in the NE part.

17. They should all be shut down..

I don't care how good their seismic reflection tech is, they can't predict all the shifts that go on..
