Shepard Smith talking to MSNBC about primetime spot as network eyes Chuck Todd move: report

Source: The Hill

MSNBC is reportedly among the cable news networks in talks with Shepard Smith, and is considering the former longtime Fox News anchor for a primetime spot.

The Daily Beast reported late Monday that MSNBC and CNN are looking to sign Smith, 56, who parted ways with Fox in October after 23 years with the network.

The online publication added that its sources say the Comcast-owned MSNBC wants to move Chuck Todd’s "Meet the Press Daily" to 9:00 a.m. ET.

The New York Post reported last week that MSNBC was looking to expand Nicolle Wallace's "Deadline: White House" to two hours starting at 4:00 p.m., which would mean Todd's 5:00 p.m. program would have to move. Unidentified sources told the Daily Beast that Todd opposes the move.

1. Gotta say, I hope they make a deal. And Chuck Todd should be moved to the NBC and MSNBC ...

parking lot guard shed.

OTOH, and for factual reporting, I'd watch Shep Smith.

3. Prime time means Shep replaces Hayes, Rachel or O'Donnell. WTF? It could technically

be Mathews but is 7pm prime time?
This is crazy shit for MSNBC to be doing.
It's one thing to replace MTP with Shep but the rest...?

4. Maybe move Matthews to 5? Smith to 7? Tweety wouldn't like it.

Not sure how much juice he has but MSNBC always puts him on during big news events so he must have some.

7. He does and even though he had some health issues last year I don't think Chris

would want to retire until after the 2020 election.
Go out with a bang as it were
I have MSNBC on most of the day, every day, and I have no desire to watch Shep Smith.
Yeah I know he was Fox News occasional "truth teller" but he stayed there for years and gave them legitimacy and didn't always tell truth so fuck that guy

8. Tweety used to be on at 5 pm ET (AND at 7 pm ET - with the 5 slot being "live" and the 7 a repeat)

But then they want to expand Wallace from 4 - 6... so Tweety may stay at 7 pm ET.

I have a feeling that Ari may be in play to be moved... It seems the 6 pm slot has been a revolving door for "tryouts" (used to be Ed then Cenk then Sharpton and now Ari).

14. Sadly, that slot has always been "marginalized"

It's an odd time that's not really considered "prime time" and is sortof in between "drive time" (4 - 6) and "prime time" (8 - 11).

I know they are not touching Rachel (their biggest ratings bonanza), although her bit of an expose regarding her bosses at NBC and Ronan Farrow makes me wonder though.

21. I know Mrs. Greenspan used to be on at noon

but I sortof stopped watching during the day (unless there was some big news event) and I am generally clueless now about all the anchor shuffling that they have done over the past couple years for their daytime lineup after Schmoe & Mika...

But IMHO I think Schmuck needs to be removed from the air period. However if they insist on him being on somewhere (he is supposedly a "Political Director" for some reason ), then keep him at once a week on Sundays.

Schmuck was actually on in the mornings at least 4 years ago IIRC and before they manufactured that "MTP Daily" mess to I guess compete with Wolf Blitzer.

I saw Todd's afternoon show, situated between Nicole Wallace and Ari Melber, described as a ratings "hammock." MSNBC should have been contemplating this, long ago.

MSNBC desperately needs a good show during this time slot. Usually I turn off MSNBC when Chuck comes on. CNN in recent days has become unwatchable. Luckily we have ESPN's Around the Horn.

Morning Joe, Nicole Wallace, endless appearances by David Jolley, Steve Schmidt, on and on and on...you wanna talk about an "embedded cell" of enemy agents? GRETA VAN SUSTEREN for God's sake????

Hire and televise some BONA FIDE forward thinkers!

I know, I know, we're EXTREMELY lucky to even have something like MSNBC, when it's finally gone there will be nothing but Newton Minnow's "vast wasteland" again.

Do they EVER go to the left? To hosts that have, as you say, paid their dues? Many great candidates that have their own YouTube channels as we speak. Thom Hartman, David Packman, Sam Seder, Ana Kasparian, on and on. They don't dare. '

Stephanie Miller would be hilarious, and deserves it more than anyone.

Doesn't MSNBC realize that every single one of those hosts you mentioned will flip back immediately to Republican party promotion the day after Trump is removed, or voted out? Maybe they do, and are just setting it all up for that.

43. Todd's real damage is his position as

NBC’s Political News Director. He singlehandedly destroyed Meet the Press but his oversized clout as boss of Political News at NBC is an ongoing disaster. His recent epiphany that MSM is colluding with Trump’s public relations operators to deliver a distorted view of US and World events would be laughable if he wasn’t in such an important position. Anyone that naive or ignorant should be working in the NBC Mailroom.

46. Interesting, is MSNBC going to buy out his Pox contract and will they sell?

Plus, how is old Shep going to do with real fact checkers? I know he gave a veneer of respectability to Pox, but that veneer was awfully thin. When Smith quit Pox, it was a "Lincoln freed everybody" sort of thing, a surprise in the middle of a contract and Pox would be within its rights to refuse to let anyone buy out that contract.

In that case, he'll have to write a book while he cools his heels for a couple of years.

I find anyone who worked for Pox to be hopelessly tainted by their appalling standards.
