A Ukrainian Boeing 737-800 carrying at least 170 people on Wednesday crashed shortly after takeoff from Tehran because of technical problems, according to the Iranian state news media.

Everyone on board died in the crash, the Iranian state news media reported.

The plane was bound for Kyiv, Ukraine’s capital, local media reported.

Photos posted by Iranian news organizations showed rescuers examining smoking rubble in a field. The Iranian Students’ News Agency, a state-run media organization, shared a video it said showed the predawn crash, with a distant light descending in the distance before a bright burst filled the sky upon impact.

2. Could be.

Could also be us.

I would presume we are watching every takeoff from Iranian airports very closely.

4. You don't know that for sure.

We have coverage of the entire country. The best time to shoot down a plane is on takeoff and landing-? That’s when they are low and slow.

I don’t believe anything in the first days of a crash/event/ whatever you want to call it. I like to wait until facts are presented.

As Sherlock Holmes once said- “When you have eliminated the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth. “– Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, stated by Sherlock Holmes.

8. Not us

The plane was in the air for 4 minutes and the Iraq border is 300 miles away. Our missiles don't go 300 miles and it would take over 10 minutes to get there. An F22 could have done it if it was within 40 miles, but it would've been detected by the Iranians and there is no chance the military would send one in that deep into Iran.

5. Whatever the cause

I feel sad for the lives that were lost. It would be devastating to the families of the passengers.

6. BBC Reporter has video of it on fire before crash

Trigger warning - no closeups. Like a rocket from a distance.

7. My guess from watching that video - the plane may have been inadvertently hit in flight by a rocket

...and then went down. Or mechanical failure. But you clearly see it going down rapidly and then flare up on fire before crashing into a fireball.
