Bill Gates calls for higher taxes on the rich

Source: Politico

Bill Gates, who routinely ranks as one of the world’s wealthiest people, is echoing Democrats’ calls for higher taxes on the rich.

Pointing to growing income inequality as well as mounting government red ink, the Microsoft co-founder and philanthropist cites a litany of ways the rich ought to be paying more.

He endorsed a type of wealth tax, saying he favors “taxing large fortunes that have been held for a long time (say, ten years or more).”

“Very wealthy people often have large investments they’ve held for long periods, and if those investments aren’t sold or traded, that money is never taxed,” Gates said in a blog post. "That doesn’t make sense.”

1. Don't worry. Someone will be along shortly to start the hate fest.

3. Here's the fair tax rate

Tax the rich until there is no more hunger
Tax the rich until there is education available for all
Tax the rich until CO2 levels are below 400ppm
Tax the rich until every able-bodied worker earns enough to survive
Tax the rich until there are no oligarchs holding entire countries hostage
Tax the rich until there is no financial reward for handgun violence
Tax the rich until poor countries aren’t held hostage by gangs
Tax the rich until offshore tax-shelter havens aren’t profitable

Just don’t ask me for more taxes to buy more weapons of war.

It seems we have a tax priority crisis, not a tax crisis. We spend most of our money killing people from other countries, and not enough money making life worth living at home.

4. Who said anything about hate?

I've known actual homeless people including being homeless myself (that is how I met them). I'm not worried about a rich person's feelings with actual homelessness going on.

6. If he wants to put money where his mouth is, let him buy out Fux & all the wingnut radio stations

and stop the propaganda madness that has led us to this "growing income inequality."

9. Why would you hate him?

Odd comment.

Tax the rich at historical levels (your choice of years). Add a wealth tax (use it or lose it?) and add some sort of transaction fee to Wall Street.

Done. Deficits disappear. Society is strong. We no longer worry about being replaced as the dominant economy on the planet.

We regain the moral high ground and resume pushing our values around the world.

Or we resume the slow slide into oligarchy, fascism....whatever hellish future you can imagine.

Choices at this point are pretty stark.

10. how about this

absolute equality

business, rich, ethnicity, NO BOXES - EQUALITY FOR ALL

Read my FIETS proposal at fiets.us

Oh, a $50,000 year income would only pay $1,000 is you spent all you made, less if you put some in savings.

12. Then why is he avoiding taxes with Warren Buffett through the Gates Foundation?

He knows it will never become reality so he can pretend to support this.

13. Guys like him always say they want higher taxes

yet, come tax time, they hire an army of accountants to pay as little as they can. How about not taking any deductions for anything?
