France Bans Dozens Of Glyphosate Weedkillers

Source: France24

France's health and environment agency said on Monday it was banning dozens of glyphosate-based weedkillers, most of the volume of such products sold in France, ruling there was insufficient data to exclude health risks.

The ANSES agency was withdrawing the marketing licence for 36 products which would no longer be authorised for use after the end of next year, it said in a statement. The products accounted for nearly three-quarters of the volume of glyphosate products sold last year in France, the European Union's biggest agricultural producer, it said. Applications to launch four new glyphosate-based products had also been rejected, ANSES added.

Glyphosate, first developed by Bayer's Monsanto unit under the brand Roundup, has been a focus of controversy since a World Health Organisation agency concluded in 2015 that it probably causes cancer. Bayer denies the charge. Bayer is facing potentially costly lawsuits in the United States and politicians in the European Union have been debating outright bans of the weedkiller.

Austria, which is attempting to be the first European country to ban all uses of the weedkiller, said on Monday a law on the ban cannot go into force on Jan. 1 as planned because the European Commission was not properly notified. In 2017, French President Emmanuel Macron pledged to end glyphosate use in France within three years, like Austria going beyond an EU decision to extend its use for five years...

However, Macron's government stopped short of legislating to outlaw glyphosate, setting instead a target to phase out its use by 2021, except where no viable alternatives existed.

Glyphosate is off-patent and marketed worldwide by a large number of other crop chemical groups in addition to Bayer. Bayer's home country Germany will ban the substance from the end of 2023.

Glyphosate is used as a herbicide by farmers, but was designated a "probable carcinogen" by the WHO in 2015.

1. Notice the contrast with America's Republicans...

France says: "There was insufficient data to exclude health risks."

The GOP says: "There was insufficient data to include health risks." (and everyone know pollution is good for you).

3. In the US, they keep finding

new uses for that crap. Now they spray the wheat after it has been cut.

Gluten intolerance?? Maybe glyphosate intolerance:

6. Yes

I thought it was bizarre that all of sudden so many people were gluten intolerant. After doing quite a bit of online research I found out about spraying the wheat to make it easier to harvest. Insane.

9. I always thought it was really stupid of Bayer to buy Monsanto a few years ago

When the lawsuits were starting to take off.

10. I agree

Really stupid. May they get what they deserve. We may never know the full extent of the damage that Monsanto and Bayer have done to the world, along with quite a few others of course. Monsanto is usually at the top of my list of Evil Corps though.

8. Trump should....

soak in a nice warm tub of glyphosate every evening, after his trying day of obstruction and running roughshod over the Constitution. There's nothing wrong with it, right? He ordered the carcinogen warning removed from it's packaging, so it must be alright for human consumption and bathing, right? A fitting punishment for such a thin-skinned piece of crap.
