Following guilty plea, Duncan Hunter barred from voting in the House

Source: Roll Call

Posted Dec 5, 2019 6:20 PM

Subheadline: Stripped of committee assignments and banned from voting, his role in Congress is diminished

The House Ethics Committee notified Rep. Duncan Hunter that his recent guilty plea means he should no longer cast votes in the House. The instruction is not mandatory, but the panel threatened action against him if he continues to vote.

Hunter last voted on Wednesday, in favor of a measure to crack down on robocalls. He did not weigh in on any of the four roll call votes the House took on Thursday.

The California Republican pleaded guilty Tuesday to one count of conspiring with his wife, Margaret, to knowingly and willfully convert his campaign funds for personal expenditures. He faces a maximum of five years in prison; a maximum $250,000 fine; and a maximum of three years supervised release.

The Thursday letter from House Ethics specifies that Hunter "should refrain from voting on any question at a meeting of the House," until or unless a court reinstates the presumption of his innocence. It says he could resume voting if reelected to the House despite the guilty plea.

And yet the idiot refuses to resign. They should stop paying him his salary AND his expenses.

1. So he cannot do his job - vote -

And he will continue to receive his salary? Do I have that right?

These guys are beyond shameless.

20. My very first thought.

If he can't do his job, there's no reason he should be allowed to stay in office.

2. No other republicans are prsssuring him to resign after pleading GUILTY to crimes. Says it all.

They all need to be asked about his status and if they are okay with having a criminal in their caucus.

4. Next up: the expulsion of Duncan Hunter

He won't be the first Congresscritter to be expelled due to a felony conviction. Tom DeLouse and Jim Trafficant were expelled for the same reason.

13. Ammar Campa-Najjar is running to finish what he started- Taking Duncan Hunter's place in CA-50

I believe Duncan's on his way out, despite what he's been saying about staying in the race. He's no longer welcome in the House, and he's a liability for the republicans. I believe he'll be making the announcement soon.

If he doesn't, Ammar's in it to win it in November, and he'll fight his way 'till then if there's no special election.

Campa-Najar barely lost last time- 51.7% 134,362 votes to 48.3% 125,448 votes- and he's in a strong position to beat Issa or whoever tries to scramble over Hunter's body.

Like Nate McMurray in New York's 27th District, who's running for the seat vacated when criminal Chris Collins quit; we may find another special election that we can devote all our time and energy to winning - two excellent shots at turning republican seats into Democratic seats in the House of Representatives. These are two of the most competitive races in the country right now.

Both of these candidates, if they win, will keep their seats, and help transform heavy-R districts into solid D.
