The blue wave crashes down on Pennsylvania again, as voters from Philly to Delaware County turn left

Source: Philadelphia Inquirer

The political forces that shaped last year’s midterm elections showed no signs of abating Tuesday, as voters turned on Republicans and establishment Democrats alike in races from Philadelphia and Scranton to the suburbs of Delaware and Chester Counties.

Outside Pennsylvania, voter unrest with President Donald Trump and the Republican Party he has taken over helped deliver victories for Democrats in Kentucky, where they narrowly took the governorship, and in Virginia, where they seized complete control of the state government for the first time in more than a quarter-century.

Locally, Democrats will hold all five seats on the Delaware County Council, a Republican stronghold since the Civil War, and also assumed a majority on the legislative body in Chester County. In Bucks County, Democrats also held a late lead for control of the board of commissioners in a close race.

And in Philadelphia, a third-party insurgent candidate weakened an already marginalized GOP by securing one of the at-large City Council seats reserved for minority parties — a seat Republicans have held for decades.

A disaster for Democrats here. Only good news is that the crooked sheriff lost. Southwestern PA is full of MAGAts.

12. I'm in Westmoreland and I feel your pain.

For all the good news last night, it's hard to feel it in this county

16. Good lord...

There is not a better person than Ted Kopas...cannot believe he lost. I remember when this was a Democratic stronghold. That damn Richard Scaife turned this whole area red when he bought the Trib. I can hardly stand to leave my house anymore this area is full of hillbillies. Our house is going on the market in the spring...cannot take it anymore.

6. Democrats are executing well

We're grabbing independents and motivating our base. But you will change the minds of few Republicans. You could hit them in the forehead with a 2x4, threaten to take their Social Security and Medicare, tell them they have to pay for granny's nursing home care, point out their illegal deeds, and it won't change their minds. A few might stay home. And they'll drag out their lawyers and long-term care insurance to prove you're an idiot.

Bevin was the most radical governor in a long while, dismantled the social safety net, and it was still a squeaker. Philly burbs? Republicans stayed home. So we still have work to do. 2020 will be competitive.

8. Yes, we MUST keep this momentum up.

Don't let our guards down. Hammer them at every level and most importantly, GOTV!

Between the blue tsunami of the mid-terms and this, I'm feeling even more energized and PROUD TO BE A DEMOCRAT!

13. In Philadelphia 'Burb

Montgomery County, Repubs got smashed. Amazing to see in this once solid red County. But Repubs here are sane, not deplorables, and it's been moving blue for awhile. I also think, unscientifically, that turnout was key. I think Dems turned out. I know I probably would have skipped this one in another time, but I voted and knew going in I would vote a straight ticket, something I NEVER do. And no, I don't normally vote for Repubs, I normally don't vote for people I don't know anything about. This time I voted for everybody right down the line.

17. Not in the Middle of the State

I vote in Cumberland County and votes straight Democrat. Not a single person I voted for won, if there was a republican in the same race.

My town is an odd mix of blue collar and higher education/medicine, with a lot of active or retired military thrown in. Enough liberals to keep the Dems hopeful, but not enough to cross the finish line first. On the other hand it MAY be that many of the Democrats are not locals, but just there for the job, and therefore less likely to vote in off years.

I know I, one of those transplants, have not always voted in off year elections, though I have in every Presidential election since I was 18. In recent years I have realized how important local offices are to the big picture.

This is a message we may need to do a better job getting out there.
