Keystone oil pipeline leaks 383,000 gallons in North Dakota

Source: Omaha World Herald-AP

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — TC Energy's Keystone pipeline leaked an estimated 383,000 gallons of oil in northeastern North Dakota, state regulators said Thursday.

Crews on Tuesday shut down the pipeline that carries tar sands oil from Canada through seven states after the leak was discovered, said Karl Rockeman, North Dakota's water quality division director. It remained closed Thursday.

The Calgary, Alberta-based company formerly known as TransCanada said in a statement that the leak affected about 22,500 square feet of land near Edinburg, in Walsh County.

The company and regulators said the cause was being investigated.

Angeline Cheek, left, a community organizer from the Fort Peck Indian Reservation, speaks about the potential environmental damage from the Keystone XL oil pipeline from Canada during a demonstration in Billings, Montana, on Tuesday.

15. A few months old. And I'll bet this leak was no accident.

It's a punishment for opposition to the pipeline.

18. The article says it started carrying oil in 2011. n/t

There's this pipeline. There's the Keystone XL pipeline.

Then there's the Dakota Access Pipeline--the one that was protested loudly--that started operation in 2017.

2. How many times was this outcome predicted?

It's always the same: Smart people warn that something bad will happen, dumb people ignore the smart people and do it anyway, the bad thing happens, the dumb people say, "Nobody could have foreseen this happening."

I'm sick of this.

11. As long as the spill is in someone else's backyard

or contaminates someone else's water supply, money is honey.

Well, he says more than that, "and it’s not something that was just suddenly
going to disappear off of our concern list because "it is going to be with us for
certainly well beyond my lifetime.”
(my bold)

That's what these greedy old white men are all about. I googled my reply title to
get this result.

We just knew this was going to happen and I cannot imagine 21,000 sq. feet
wasted. We are destroying our planet.

7. Something seems fishy about those numbers.

If that estimated loss was placed on the listed area affected, it would result in a wall of oil almost 2.3 feet below (or above) the surface at 100% saturation by volume. The contaminated soil would have to be over 9 feet deep at 25% saturation. Roughly 1/2 an acre seems way too small an area.

Something doesn't add up for me.

8. Distracting number

“...only 22, 500 square feet of land”.

Oh yeah? 383,000 gallons of oil leaked. That’s 51,200 cubic feet of oil.

That means the spill was almost 2 1/2 feet deep over 22,500 square feet.

So where did it go?

This is why so many of our First People were standing up so strongly against the pipeline being forced through their ancestral lands.

Fuck Keystone to hell and back......
