MPs reject Johnson's Brexit timetable; a major defeat for the PM

Source: The Guardian

MPs have voted to reject the governmentís timetable for the passage of the bill that would implement the prime ministerís Brexit deal.

They voted against by 322 to 308; a majority of 14.

Boris Johnson said earlier today he would withdraw the bill and seek a general election if he lost the vote.

Johnson says he'll talk to the EU and put the bill on hold; no sign of asking for an election yet.

1. I don't think he will get a general election even if he asks.

The best he'll get is a second referendum, which I don't think he wants.

2. A 2nd referendum would likely go the other way, right?

I saw hundreds of thousands in the streets of London the other day - were they mostly anti-Brexit? Looked that way in the interviews.

7. I doubt they'll give up the pound

I think they would want to go back to a pre-Brexit environment, although I think they need to take a deeper look at what caused this mess in the first place, which is something that has been difficult for us to do here as well due to compromised elected officials - I,.e., massive interference by Russia and their oligarchs, who have propped up the extreme RW.

6. If the British conservatives are counting on Trump saving them...

...with some special trade deal, they might want to consult with the Kurds.

8. European Council President Donald Tusk recommends the EU accept the request for an extension

ie the 3 month one Johnson was forced to ask for:

Following PM @BorisJohnsonís decision to pause the process of ratification of the Withdrawal Agreement, and in order to avoid a no-deal #Brexit, I will recommend the EU27 accept the UK request for an extension. For this I will propose a written procedure.
