Furious Republicans prepare to rebuke Trump on Syria

Source: The Hill

Congressional Republicans appear poised to hand President Trump a stinging rebuke of his Turkey and Syria policy when lawmakers return to Washington this week.

GOP lawmakers, furious over Trump’s decision to withdraw troops to make way for a Turkish offensive against Kurdish allies, are preparing legislation that would force the administration to impose sanctions on Turkey.

Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin announced Friday that Trump would sign an executive order giving the Treasury Department “very significant” new sanctions authorities against Turkey, but it’s unclear whether the move will be enough to placate Republicans on Capitol Hill.

Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) called the announcement “welcome news,” while Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) said the administration needs to “up their game.”

2. Too late. And the Hill is a rightwing outlet

The Hill is owned by a rightwing billionaire - a Trump-fundraiser.

The owner, Finkelstein, uses the Hill to help the GOP by choosing stories that help Republican messaging -- like this one.

Kiss his ass. I doubt we will see anything but a few sternly worded rebukes, they are Repukes after all.

16. Yes. It makes it a selectively-amplified lie

By choosing what to promote, even if they publish stories that contain no fabrications, the Hill is manipulating us. It's lying to us.

The choice of story is itself a way to create propaganda.

Like this. Fox covered hamburger emojis when Manafort was getting convicted.
Was that factually untrue? No, there are really hamburger emojis.
Was it propaganda? Yes. The choice of story can itself be propaganda.

24. The paradox of voting

Followed The Hill closely for about 1.5 years. But recently couldn't do it anymore for the very reason you note. They provide a very tailored narrative of events that objectively is for the benefit of the right-wing. Sure The Hill isn't quite like The Federalist, but is that saying much?

It would be easy to counter and say, but what about Truthdig??? They sure are a load of left-wing radicals. But how many times do you see Chris Hedges on the PBS Newshour or some other cable news program??? The issue is correspondents for The Hill keep finding their grimy way on cable news which gives the platform creditably that it dose not deserve.

The Hill deliberately distorts 'news' for the aim(s) of 1) getting people outraged for the garbage they publish 2) producing low-informed citizen who will LARP Anthony Downs' Theory of voters acting against their own interest in a moment of irrationally when voting.

...on the SUSAN COLLINS scale of concern. And, oh yeah, it's only A GODDAMNED WEEK TOO LATE. Slapping some half-assed, symbolic sanctions on Turkish delight imports AFTER the Kurds have been slaughtered, or driven into Iraq is meaningless.

23. the end?

For what it's worth, Republican strategist Rick Wilson delivers a spot on critique of the GOP regarding this 'rebuke.' I personally find Mike Murphy's claim that "30 Republican Senators Would Vote to Impeach Trump' If Vote Was Secret" to be credible. Sure the Senator Mike Lee's of the world go down with the ship. But your George Bush variety conservatives have always looked down on Mr. Trump. They did so openly during the 2016 GOP primary. Example: Sen. Ted "This man is a pathological liar. He doesn't know the difference between truth and lies. He lies — practically every word that comes out of his mouth" Cruz.

But the festering rabid base, feed on 30 years of right wring propaganda, was sold on that sweet Neo-fascism Mr. Trump was/is willing to bring to ye-old-marketplace-of-ideas. GOP senators know this to. You go against Mr. Trump, you lose your election. So, as Mr. Wilson notes GOP members reaction to Turkey invading Syria is less about that and more about Mr. Trump screwing up the entire system they had built.

This is why the GOP is protecting Mr. Trump too. If Mr. Trump fails, so dose the GOP and rightly so. Every story has a beginning middle and end. The GOP shall be no different.

25. Aw, comeon, "furious Republicans"?

That only happens when the subject is Hillary, Robert Mueller, or "Obama care".
These guys stumble over each other in a rush to kiss the royal Trumpian ass.
They cry crocodile tears for the suffering of the Kurds.
The real tears are over the possibility of losing their seats in Congress if Trump has someone challenge them in a primary.
They don't have the courage to stand up for the country.
They would rather watch the Republic die from their seats in Congress as Trump pulls everything down around their ears to the delight of Putin.

Dont load it up with bullshit, craft a tough sanctions bill that a Trump veto cannot stop. THAT is how you slap down that ego.
