Rep. Engel Blasts Trump Administration's Potential Plans to Pull Out of Open Skies Treaty
Source: Daily Beast
House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Eliot Engel on Monday expressed his alarm over the Trump administrations potential plans to pull out of the Open Skies Treaty, a post-Cold War agreement that allows countries to operate reconnaissance flights over other nations and collect data on military activities with the aim of building trust between countries. Since coming into force in 2002, the treaty has become a key tool for the U.S. and its European allies to monitor Russian military deployments to former Soviet satellite countries, including Russian aggression in Ukraine. Withdrawing from the treaty could upend this transatlantic alliance, and place Ukraine at greater risk.
Rep. Eliot Engel (D-NY), chairman of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs, sent a letter to National Security Adviser Robert OBrien on Monday, expressing his alarm over Trumps reported plans to leave the treaty. I am deeply concerned by reports that the Trump Administration is considering withdrawing from the Open Skies Treaty and strongly urge you against such a reckless action... American withdrawal would only benefit Russia and be harmful to our allies and partners national security interests, Engel wrote. ... The United States should prepare for the challenge that Russia presentsnot abandon mechanisms that provide the United States with an important tool in maintaining surveillance on Russia.

(4,066 posts)The treaties must be ratified by the Senate. Why is the President able to unilaterally leave a treaty? Does a President have that authority? Or, is Trump just claiming it and no one is stopping him as usual?

(26,027 posts)Russia an out to pull out as well thereby denying the west the ability to more closely monitor Russian activity in the Ukraine.
Why would Putin want that seeing as he already seemingly took what he wanted? Because I do not think he is done and I suspect he is trying to lay the ground work for taking more both by amassing troops on the border and by smuggling in Russian troops into other areas of the Ukraine he is interested in taking and having them act like they are Ukrainian citizens struggling for their freedom.
In fact I think the long term goal is to take the entire south of the Ukraine for a future pipeline for oil and gas so Putin can become even richer.
