'Get real': Senior Democrats shut down Kavanaugh impeachment push

Source: Politico

Senior Democrats are moving quickly to snuff out calls to impeach Brett Kavanaugh, arguing those tactics are unrealistic and politically harmful.

Democrats are already wrestling with whether to try to oust President Donald Trump, and leadership sees little room for the party to take on a second divisive impeachment saga barely a year before the presidential election. So the demands by 2020 presidential contenders to remove the Supreme Court justice, on the heels of new reporting about allegations of sexual misconduct, are getting panned.

“Get real,” as Senate Minority Whip Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) put it Monday afternoon.

“We’ve got to get beyond this ‘impeachment is the answer to every problem.’ It’s not realistic,” Durbin said. “If that’s how we are identified in Congress, as the impeachment Congress, we run the risk that people will feel we’re ignoring the issues that mean a lot to them as families.”

Impeachment has no statute of limitations for the Supremes. They can always be impeached over and over again if need be. Time for Brett to explain why he whips out his weenie every time he drinks.

Next up impeach Clarance Thomas for sexual harassment and bribery.

68. You misrepresent it

It's not either or. It's both.

You can not let voters forget what pervs the GOP are. For too long us liberals played nice and polite while knowing full well RepubliCONS were using every dirty trick in the book. The least we can do is constantly remind them of the traitorous, immoral, debauchery and crimes the supposed conservative party commits hourly.

Does little man Putin only uses trolls? Does the NRA ever keep quiet after yet another gun massacre? People are suffering and dying under this corrupt rule and ignoring an opportunity to show their true colors is bringing a knife to a gun fight.

We only have the House. Should we stop there? Should we quit striving for the Senate, the presidency and the courts? Use every tool possible.

Let one democrat feel the sting of our ire. It can be a message to our leadership that we're serious about fighting back. Republicans have changed our government by fighting... not by deciding to fail before the fight begins.

12. This issue isnt the Democrats the issue is the math and finding a way to get the number of votes to

convict him is simply probably not going to happen.
What would happen though is the Repugnant leadership would get together in a secret meeting and hash out what of theirs is most vulnerable to a Democratic challenger like Collins and they would have her and some others vote to convict.
They will not allow enough to vote to convict that he is actually removed from office but they will do enough to try and take the wind out of our sails before the election.
A better plan is simply to hold their feet to the fire as we get up to the election and beyond and if he should win then seek impeachment in 2021 just before the next round of elections.

All post election polling showed that our promise to defend healthcare against republicans continued attack is what swayed the suburban voters, mainly female, to switch to voting Democratic. And they could easily switch back and give a shit about impeachment. But they care deeply about healthcare for their families.

We do not have the power to remove anyone from office. An impeachment with no conviction is a win for trump.

25. I am SO F*CKING SICK of these "bread-and-butter issues" Democrats...

I don't see how they fail to realize that, barring a major economic collapse, Trump WINS on "bread-and-butter issues." Because, while we can nitpick about how he just inherited Obama's economy, or that virtually all the gains are going to the top, the fact remains that most people aren't doing badly right now. Unemployment is pretty low, the financial indicators seem to be good. Trump certainly hasn't botched the economy (yet). If we want the 2020 election to be about whether voters feel comfortable with the economy, we better start planning for who will be the candidate with the best chance of beating Ivanka in 2024.

26. Ironically, it will be a lot harder then...

The sad fact is that, if enough blew up in Rapey Brett's face over the next month to make him a major public embarrassment, the only chance we'd have of getting impeachment and conviction would be while Trump remains in office, because, if the scandal is bad enough, we might get Republicans to join in knowing that Donnie will get the chance to replace him with another conservative. But, if a Democrat becomes president? There's no way you're going to get even one single Republican to vote to convict during an impeachment trial if they know that, by doing so, they'd remove a reliable conservative vote and replace him with a justice nominated by President Biden/Warren/Sanders/whoever. Even if, to use the old saying, Rapey Brett was found in bed with a dead girl or a live boy, they'd make sure he stays on the court, because anything would be preferable to -- gasp! -- a liberal.

Hope Thomas refuses to step down before Jan, 2021. That really is the only hope right now. That and Ginsburg making it to Jan, 2021. And the Democrats getting 50 Senators. And the Presidency.

Why do people decide not to vote? For some, it is a conscious decision. How many times have I heard -- especially from younger people -- things like "they're all politicians; they say and do whatever will get them the most votes/keep them in office?"; "they're just out for themselves, not what's good/right for the people." We are talking about Democratic and D-leaning voters here.

In my mind, at worst it's a wash -- so, let's do what's right ... and by doing so, energize our voters, energize our base.

40. I agree with their approach. Impeachment now is a distraction.

Kavanaugh is the epitome of the whiney privileged kid believes he is above everyone else and has gotten away with nasty behavior his whole life. No, he does not belong on the Supreme Court, but it would be better to suggest that if he were a decent human being he would resign rather than threaten impeachment.

Democrats need to focus, not go in many different directions. They are no calling enough attention to bills passed already that Moscow Mitch is killing single handedly. I think they would be better served to have at most two committees investigating Trump for impeachment: one focusing on obstruction and the other focusing on emoluments and Trump’s self enrichment. Even to this committed Democrat, it’s hard to understand what the various committees are doing.

44. Senior Democrats are moving quickly to snuff out calls to impeach Brett Kavanaugh...

arguing those tactics are unrealistic and politically harmful.

45. Democrats should impeach Kavanaugh AFTER they control the gov't (house, senate, Oval)

IOW, AFTER 2020/2021. Kavanaugh will be there. It's not like they don't know where to find him or the witnesses against him. There is some TIME. They can concentrate on 2020 for right now, impeach the rapist later.

67. Bullies ARE cowards.

They depend on third parties not to notice their behavior.

69. Kavanaugh could resign now and give Trump another chance to appoint someone else

I'm hoping that we win everything in 2020 and we make a deal with him and the GOP that he will resign and we won't expand the court.

I know that means that he escapes justice, but I think that he'll never be punished for his numerous crimes, anyway.

71. Oh, for fuck's sake...

We all know DAMN fuckin' well what the GOP would be doing at this very moment if Kavanaugh was an Obama appointee...

(No, they wouldn't impeach him, but they WOULD browbeat and shame Dem leadership to the point where we'd twist his arm into resigning himself.)

72. As much as I dislike how Kavanaugh got on the Supreme Court,

I think this is an unnecessary distraction at this time.
I would rather wait until after the 2020 election to pursue the matter further.
It's impossible to successfully pursue now, and if he resigned, Trump would just put another swamp creature on the court...someone who might not be vulnerable to removal for past actions and could give the Republicans decades of right wing conservative rulings.
It might even be easier to pursue this is civil court.
In any event, we need a non-partisan Justice Department to get any real investigation done.
That isn't going to happen until 2021.

75. I can't see impeachment hearings based solely on 30-year old accusations.

The Cons will drum up an equal number of folks to deny. We can't prove he's lying if we can't prove he did it.

We need to find some real damning evidence they can't refute.
