Cargo plane crashes, burns near Toledo airport

TOLEDO, Ohio ó A Toledo Port Authority official says a cargo plane crashed as it was approaching the airport, bursting into flames as it struck several unoccupied vehicles.

Authorities say the crash happened around 3 a.m. just east of the Toledo Express Airport at an auto repair shop. The plane hit multiple unoccupied vehicles at the shop not far from the Ohio Turnpike.

Joe Rotterdam is manager of airport operations with the Lucas County Port Authority. He says the wreckage involves several pieces of the plane over a large debris field.

Rotterdam said itís believed two people were aboard. It is unclear if they survived the crash and a search of the scene is currently underway.

Two killed when cargo plane crashes near Toledo Express Airport

SWANTON, Ohio (WTVG) - The Toledo Lucas County Port Authority has confirmed that two people were killed when a cargo plane crashed just outside of the Toledo Express Airport early Wednesday morning.

According to crews on the scene, that plane was a conveyor cargo plane flying from Millington, Tennessee which crashed on top of two semis at Bubba's Auto and Deisel near the airport around 3 AM Wednesday morning.

Police on the scene say the plane was fully engulfed when they arrived on the scene this morning. Port Authority officials say that fire is now extinguished. Police and fire crews from multiple departments arrived on scene to assist.

According to CBS News, the FAA says the plane was a Convair 440.

3. CONVAIR-440 known as the METROPOLITAN..

great aircraft in the 240, 340, etc series... from the mid-1950s.. last, I think, of the WASP engines before Convair went to turboprops...

5. The Convair series had a good record of dependability.. that's all I know

The 240, I trhink it was, was the JFK's "Airforce One." The first such, I believe...

6. It was this 62 year old Convair.

I think there's still a small fleet of these flying from Miami to the islands on a regular basis.
