Two U.S. service members killed in Afghanistan

Source: Reuters

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Two American service members were killed in Afghanistan on Wednesday, the NATO-led Resolute Support mission said in a statement, as the United States seeks to reach a negotiated end to the nearly 18-year-old war.

It gave no further details and withheld the names of the service members until next of kin were informed.

The incident brings the number of U.S. troops killed in Afghanistan to at least 14 in 2019.

About 14,000 U.S. troops are stationed in Afghanistan as part of the U.S.-led NATO mission to train, assist and advise Afghan forces and to carry out counter-terrorism operations.

3. Honestly? This is an older form of warfare. Expect it to take generations

Wars fought and ended in a matter of a few years is a characterisitc of Napoleonic-derived systems in the gunpowder age. This period likely ended in the 20th C. An older, uglier type of war ia now being waged around the world. Hundred Years wars. Eighty Years War. I dispair sometimes.

4. Taliban says: T-r-u-u-u-u-u-u-u-s-t us.

Trump has it covered.

We can trust the Taliban. (Sarcasm?)

The U.S. and the Taliban now appear to be closing in on an agreement under which U.S. forces would withdraw in exchange for guarantees that Afghanistan would not become a haven for other terrorist groups.
