Cuccinelli rewrites Statue of Liberty poem to make case for limiting immigration

This discussion thread was locked as off-topic by JudyM (a host of the Latest Breaking News forum).

Source: CNN

The acting director of US Citizenship and Immigration Services in a new interview revised the iconic poem on the Statue of Liberty's pedestal to suggest that only immigrants who can "stand on their own two feet" are welcome in the United States.

Ken Cuccinelli tweaked the famous poem from Emma Lazarus -- whose words, "Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free" are long associated with immigration to the US -- as part of a case for strict new measures pushed Monday by the Trump administration that could dramatically change the legal immigration system.

"Would you also agree that Emma Lazarus's words etched on the Statue of Liberty, 'Give me your tired, give me your poor,' are also a part of the American ethos?" NPR's Rachel Martin asked Cuccinelli on "Morning Edition" in an interview published Tuesday.

"They certainly are: 'Give me your tired and your poor who can stand on their own two feet and who will not become a public charge,'" he replied. "That plaque was put on the Statue of Liberty at almost the same time as the first public charge was passed -- very interesting timing."

Ms Lazarus's New Colossus;

The New Colossus
Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame,
With conquering limbs astride from land to land;
Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand
A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame
Is the imprisoned lightning, and her name
Mother of Exiles. From her beacon-hand
Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command
The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame.
"Keep, ancient lands, your storied pomp!" cries she
With silent lips. "Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"

It doesn't say a goddamned thing about bootstraps!

Not a coincidence that the only history these guys know is that which they can string together in false logic to create their own narratives so support stupid crap.

Before anything else, there was 'All men are created equal'. How is 'Cuche' smarter than Jefferson?

our boldness as a nation.... our greatness and strength in the world.... making a strong nation "Out of many one", E pluribus unum, is a mistake that needs to be rectified by the criminals in the white house and their enablers. F*#$ right off!

We have to start calling for RESIGNATION NOW. They are taking apart the train faster than we will be an;e to put it back together.

Frankly... I don't think we have the leisure for impeachment. The criminals are going pedal to the metal right now.

When I was young, my great grandmother used to check my hands for callouses, reminding me that an honest working man had callouses. I had callouses, but I also understood metaphorically what she meant.

Much like the brazen giant of Greek fame,
With conquering limbs astride from land to land;
Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand
A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame
Is the coal-fired current, and her name
Mother of Profit. From her beacon-hand
Glows little welcome; her scornful eyes command
The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame.

“Keep, ancient lands, your tired and poor!” cries she
With silent lips. “Give me your energetic, your rich,
Your young and privileged yearning to cash in,
The well-connected of your ruling few.
Send these, well-fed, by smooth jet flight to me,
I lift my lamp beside the casino door!”

This characterization by Cuccinelli is interesting but the policy change itself was reported in LBN yesterday, so it was alerted on as not being LBN “important news of national interest.” It’d be great to repost in GD, which doesn’t have that OP restriction.
