US military says Venezuela fighter jet made an 'unsafe' approach to US aircraft

Source: CNN

Washington (CNN)A Venezuelan fighter aircraft recently made an "unsafe approach" to a US Navy aircraft flying in international airspace, "endangering the safety of the crew and jeopardizing" the aircraft's mission, the US military said Sunday.

The incident, which occurred on Friday, involved a "Russian-made" SU-30 Flanker Venezuelan fighter aircraft and a US Navy EP-3 Aries II aircraft conducting a "detection and monitoring" mission, US Southern Command said in a statement. In a Sunday tweet, the Southern Command said the incident happened in international airspace over the Caribbean Sea.

"After reviewing video documentation, we have determined the Russian-made fighter aggressively shadowed the EP-3 at an unsafe distance in international airspace for a prolonged period of time, endangering the safety of the crew and jeopardizing the EP-3 mission," the statement read.

Venezuela's military weighed in Sunday, denouncing the US aircraft for violating "security of air operations and international treaties."

1. "Detection and monitoring mission," of course, is GOPspeak for provocation.

Cheeto feels the only way to guarantee himself a second term is by remaking himself as a war president.

And Venezuela has been thought of, from the day he took office, as the low-hanging fruit.

3. Yup. Much easier target than Iran

And with another wanna be fascist buddy to help him from Brazil, who is much more of a threat to liberalism, I'm sure that some military operation could happen quickly. And with the MSM and Democrats helping to demonize the elected Maduro whenever they can as well for Mr. Trump, its a win win. The hawks in the Democratic party would have to clap along with him, politically neutering them instantly. And the Democratic candidates that spoke against it would be ridiculed by the MSM between the loud trumpeteering for THE TROOPS!...USA USA USA!

4. +1

I heard someone recently ask "have we learned nothing from Bush's Iraq invasion?"

To which I'd say: Well, Democrats for the most part have - but Republicans?

They're like that obnoxious drunk at the bar: always wanting hair from the dog that bit them.

11. One can only hope.

Most Democrats do, of course. But will enough independents?

(Republicans are, with few exceptions, hopeless - even after the Iraq disaster)

I am posting out of hopefulness that a few million people wake the heck up.

Sigh.

2. "US military says"

The problem with that now is that the military's "boss" is an habitual liar. When "US military says" something there's no way to know if it's actually true or if it's just another lie they were ordered to tell by their "boss" who wants to overthrow the VZ government.

5. Of course it would be a defenseless recon aircraft instead of an F18.

that a Russian pilot would pull?

9. "aggressively shadowed the EP-3 at an unsafe distance"..... you mean something like this?

If pilots know what they're doing (and one would think that military pilots should) then it's not really a big deal to fly in close proximity to another aircraft. I think someone is looking for an excuse to make a stink.

I'd like to see video, or at least some photos, to see just how close they actually were.

13. You'd think.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blue_Angels#Team_accidents,_deaths , however, says that even those that train especially for this kind of stunt make mistakes, there's hardware failure. It's risky flying.

Moreover, it's not like the US pilot trained for stunt flying. They're a recon plane and trained for a different kind of flying.

You fly in international space, you shouldn't be harassed. Any more than if you're walking in public, you shouldn't be harassed.

14. There is no comparison

the differences are many - for one thing all the pilots practice together so they know exactly what the others are doing. The EP-3 pilot had no idea what the Venezuelan pilot was doing so there was a high risk of them accidentally turning into each other. Secondly, the Venezuelan Air Force is practically grounded due to lack of money so it is doubtful that the Venezuelan pilot had the skill to flawlessly pull off prolonged close in maneuvering.
