WHO declares Ebola in Congo to be emergency of 'international concern'

Source: The Washington Post

NAIROBI — The World Health Organization took the rare step of classifying an ongoing Ebola outbreak in eastern Congo a “public health emergency of international concern” just days after the first case of the virus was confirmed in the major city of Goma on the border with Rwanda.

The last time the global health body declared an international emergency for Ebola was during the 2014-2016 outbreak in West Africa that killed more than 11,000 people. The designation means the current outbreak qualifies for a higher level of global vigilance and mobilization to stem its spread.

Ebola began spreading in Congo’s conflict-ridden North Kivu province last August and has infected more than 2,500 and killed nearly 1,700, according to official health ministry figures.

The WHO declaration represents its highest level of alert. It is invoked only in response to the most dire threats and has only been issued four times before. The first time was in 2009 during the H1N1 influenza epidemic that is believed to have infected up to 200 million worldwide; the second in May 2014 when a paralyzing form of polio re-emerged in Pakistan and Syria; the third in August 2014 with the Ebola epidemic that devastated West Africa, and the fourth in February 2016, with the Zika epidemic in Brazil.

5. That's been a nightmare for years.

The incubation period, or the time interval from infection to onset of symptoms, is from 2 to 21 days.

People are not contagious until they develop symptoms.

Ebola virus disease infections can only be confirmed through laboratory testing.

7. Yes, even as Obama harnessed every department of our government that could respond to do so

The State Department and the military helped lead the world's effort to end the epidemic. That epidemic had the possibility of spreading throughout the entire world.

Trump will likely fight this by sending a nasty tweet.

6. Trump has been waiting for this to close the borders

to everyone.

and 1700 dead and 2500 infected... it is almost too late to stop in from spreading far and wide

My biggest fear is that the virus mutates into an airborne virus... and that it takes longer for symptoms to appear.
