Fla. Gov. could get more power to select judges

The Associated Press

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- Florida Gov. Rick Scott could be getting more power to appoint judges under a bill now moving in the Legislature.

A House committee on Wednesday voted along partisan lines to approve a bill that would give the governor the ability to remove some members of the nominating panels responsible for coming up with lists of potential judges. The nominating commissions give the governor a list of finalists.

The governor appoints people to the nominating panels now. But the measure sponsored by Rep. Matt Gaetz, R-Destin, says that some nominating commission members serve at the pleasure of the governor and can be removed at any time.

Democrats who voted against the bill said it would undermine the constitution, but Gaetz argued it would allow the governor to hold panel members accountable.
