Clyburn walks back impeachment comments

Source: Politico

House Majority Whip Jim Clyburn on Monday walked back remarks suggesting that Democrats will impeach President Donald Trump, reversing course to say he’s “farther” from backing impeachment than most of his caucus.

Clyburn’s comments came after a private leadership meeting Monday evening in which Speaker Nancy Pelosi reiterated that she didn’t support launching impeachment proceedings right now despite a growing push within the caucus.

“I’m probably farther away from impeachment than anybody in our caucus,” Clyburn (D-S.C.) told reporters Monday night. “We will not get out in front of our committees. We’ll see what the committees come up with. I’ve said that forever.”

Asked by POLITICO whether he thought impeachment proceedings were inevitable, Clyburn simply said no.

...but I'm not sure it's warranted. Dean was Chief WH Counsel at the time of Watergate, and has 45 years of hindsight to go by. I think his testimony is very helpful.

It will be a nice educational tool to have Dean testify and to compare what Nixon did to what Trump has done and is doing.

7. Plus I'm thinking the WG events will stir memories in the minds of those older Fox News watchers.

I have encountered none who want to relive the Nixon glory years. Even they could see the corruption over time.

to use Trump and the Republicans in the House refusal to reign in Trump against them in the next election to win more seats.
It's a gamble though but then so could be trying to impeach him as it could rally his base to the polls.

For such a strong man why is he always a victim?

9. Sure but look at what happened in the last election.

The Republicans had to spend hundreds of millions more on a number of elections to win in areas that 10 years ago would have been easy for them.
That was all due to Trump and the clear lack of a backbone on the Republicans part and if that repeats in 2020 then they will be trouble.

11. Democrats, Republicans, and the Washington media all iive in a mirrored bubble

The MSM has long perpetrated the myth that America is a conservative country. And that even the slightest movement left or even attempts to slow down the rush to the right, is considered shocking, revolutionary, disruptive. And the country would NEVER accept it. (But shocking, disruptive moves to the right are the new normal)

And make no mistake, the MSM are eager and ready to bolster the myth if impeachment starts with lead off headlines like "Will the attempts at impeachment harm the Democratic party?!!" And have on conservative guests that basically answer "Yes, most definitely" And work to shape public opinion of how shocking disruptive and revolutionary this action is. We have to expect that. Our leaders need to look beyond that bubble. They have more support for impeachment than they realize, and more that would jump on board once it starts.

Many senior members that have been there a long time are so entrenched in this bubble, its all they can see. I think they are greatly underestimating the frustration out there with Democrats, even Independents and Never Trumpers. No one WANTS Nancy to fail. Maybe it will work, no impeachment, just hearings where no one shows up, and Democratic voters will be impressed with their restraint. Its a gamble either way.

But the last thing anyone wants is refusing to allow impeachment, probably the top time in history where impeachment is imperative, and why it was written in as an option in the first place....AND....we still lose in 2020. Worst case scenario. Then it will be too late to criticize Pelosi.
