Missouri Governor Signs Bill That Ban Abortions From the Eighth Week of Pregnancy Onward

Source: Bloomberg/AP

Jefferson City, Mo. (AP) -- Missouri Gov. Mike Parson on Friday signed a bill that bans abortions on or beyond the eighth weeks of pregnancy without exceptions for cases of rape or incest, making it among the most restrictive abortion policies in the nation.

Under the law that comes into force Aug. 28, doctors who violate the eight-week cutoff could face five to 15 years in prison. A legal challenge is expected, although it's unclear when that might occur.

The measure includes exceptions for medical emergencies, such as when there is a risk of death or permanent physical injuries to "a major bodily function of the pregnant woman." But women who find themselves pregnant after being raped or subjected to incest will not be allowed to abort after eight weeks. Women who terminate their pregnancies cannot be prosecuted under the law.

When pressed last week on the rape and incest issue, Parson, a Republican, told reporters that "all life has value." President Donald Trump has said he supports exceptions in cases of rape and incest in abortion bans.

They want government the size to fit in a woman's vagina

6. I'd like to see their medical licenses

I feel like people legislating these restrictions/bans are essentially trying to practice medicine and few, if any of them, have absolutely no idea about how female reproductive systems work (most have likely been poorly educated about sexuality and reproduction in general) because if they did, what they're doing wouldn't make any sense.

9. poor education runs rampant in the republican world. An in-law accused me

of 'doing something' to make my daughter be born retarded. It is a genetic anomaly and when I told her it happened at the moment of conception, she scoffed and essentially accused me of lying. She had no idea of what I was talking about. She had no idea of genetics and how they work! this is someone who has a college degree and was a teacher. And is always telling people how much smarter her family is than anyone else. Apparently right-wingers think birth defects are caused by 'botched abortions'.

13. I'm cynical at this point

What was done to prevent this from happening in first place?

Where was that "blue tsunami" when the legislation was being signed?!?

Where was that "blue tsunami" when the legislation was being debated?!?

Where was that "blue tsunami" when the legislation was being introduced?!?

I truly, deeply, hope you are right about the 2020 election at the state govt level as well as the federal House and Senate level.

Who we elect as president will mean a lot less if we cannot secure both houses and more state legislatures and governorships.

8. You know this is going to get bad

Rapists will be suing for visitation and receiving it...”that the pregnancy was the fault of unfortunate circumstances does not alter the fact that the plaintiff has parental rights to his child, and this court has no choice but to respect them.”

I predict attack ads featuring women with babies in their arms lined up before the visitor entrance to a prison while a long list of convicted rapists scrolls up the screen.

12. With my second pregnancy, I did not know I was pregnant until the 12th week.

Once I felt movement, I had a doctor check me and he told me I was pregnant. I had not missed a period and had no clue until then. The baby was born premature, is mentally challenged and had a cleft palate.

14. I am sooooooo disgusted with this state right now!

As a side note: My husband and I are traveling to Iowa and Nebraska this week so I can complete my bucket list item of visiting all the states that border Missouri (I have lived here my whole life). We were thinking of passing through Jeff. City on the way back, now I have to just so I can spit on the Capitol, even though it just got hit by a bad storm and I know there are still some good folks here.

I am hoping this wakes up the women here who keep voting Republican. Maybe now some of them might see how dangerous repubs are to women.

15. It'd be at least 3 years, up to 8, before these could become law,

if worst comes to worst.

An ignored commercial for a medication snatched at my attention the other way, though, when among the complications being read off was that it could hide indications of pregnancy. ! That one's commercial viability is definitely at stake also.
