US suspends all flights to Venezuela citing safety and security

U.S. flights to Venezuela are being suspended due to safety and security concerns, officials with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security said Wednesday.

The decision was made "based on the ongoing political instability and increased tensions in Venezuela and associated inadvertent risk to flight operations," officials said.

The suspension of flights will be revisited "if and when the conditions in Venezuela change," said officials.

American Airlines was the last U.S. commercial airline offering service in and out of Venezuela until the company suspended flights in March. Wednesday's suspension eliminates both commercial and cargo flights between the two countries.

U.S. Suspends Passenger and Cargo Flights to Venezuela

By Anatoly Kurmanaev
May 15, 2019

CARACAS — The United States banned all air transport with Venezuela on Wednesday over security concerns, further isolating the troubled South American nation by severing one of its last links to the world’s largest economy.

The Department of Homeland Security said it decided to immediately suspend all commercial and cargo flights between the United States and Venezuela because the country’s political crisis threatened the safety of passengers, aircraft and crew.

The decision will be a heavy blow for millions of Venezuelans who rely on donations or remittances from relatives abroad to survive, as the country’s crumbling economy has destroyed most of its industry and agriculture and slashed government imports. Many have relied on airline courier services from Miami to obtain scarce medication, spare parts and food.

“This will be a catastrophe for a lot of people,” said Feliciano Reyna, head of the health nonprofit Acción Solidaria, which receives medical donations from the United States through air courier services. “This will complicate enormously the transportation of humanitarian aid to the country.”

2. Venezuela wasn't real safe

Back in 2000 when I worked there for my company.
You didn’t wander out alone. When I was there they even robbed the truck from pro baseball player Hidalgo. Don’t think the police will help you, stay away from them.

4. The hunger for power must be huge for Maduro

because it must be clear to himself that he is totally incompetent for the job and clearly can't fix the political/economic problems for the country.

Maduro needs to realize he is a total loser and resign if he has any respect for his own people.

5. No passenger flights were going anyway, only cargo.

And most cargo was most likely stolen by Maduro & his cronies, like everything else, so thats tough.
