This sixth grader wanted to 'go down fighting' so he grabbed a bat during a school shooting

(CNN)Children burst into tears in sixth-grader Nate Holley's classroom as gunfire erupted at his school Tuesday.


Two people believed to be students at STEM School Highlands Ranch had opened fire in two classrooms in the suburban Denver school.
"It was really chaotic," the 12-year-old said. "Most of the kids didn't know what to do."

Nate said he froze as gunshots shattered a window. A siren rang and someone in his classroom cracked a joke. His teacher shushed the student and moved them behind a desk and then to the closet.

"I had my hand on a metal baseball bat just in case," Nate told CNN's Brooke Baldwin. "'Cause I was gonna go down fighting if I was gonna go down."
Nate's wrenching account is a tragic reminder of what it's like to be a child in the United States in the age of school shootings. .................................

1. My plan to protect my little first graders in my classroom,

which had doors that could only be locked/unlocked from the OUTSIDE, was to get the fire extinguisher, knock the shooter on the head, tell my students to run and tie him up with a jump rope then call the office. After that I would boil water in my microwave to scald his face before help came. I came up with this idea after the Virginia Tech shootings. It's sooooooooooooooo much fun being an over worked, over educated and underpaid and disrespected teacher in the 2000s.

3. One thing I learned about little kids

that they can do better than adults is they can RUN REALLY FAST. They can cut tight turns and corners so they have that going for them. I saw that during a demonstration from our DARE officer who I had come into my class to train kids on safety. They outran the officer every time and he didn't let them either, it was legit.

4. My son and his friends have been planning since elementary school

They put serious thought into it. Turning over cafeteria tables, rushing a shooter, it goes on and on.

Now they're in high school and they carry all of their books in their backpacks so they can use it as a shield.

Their sweet innocence was turned to survival at an early age. I just... They should not have to think about this.

younger generations grew up with mass shootings and I hope that will finally bring about some sensible reforms as more of them vote and run for office

6. What a kid.

I was at my granddaughters school this morning for a all school Mother's Day breakfast. Her school is K to 5. Kids all over the place with mothers grands and sibs. I was in the hallway with the 2nd and 3rd graders. ... Thinking about that kid and all the ones this morning it makes me sad and mad that they have to worry about school shootings.
Although when I was in grade school there was a fire in a school in Chicago I remember that I worried about that happening at my school until I graduated 12th grade. Then there were "duck and cover" drills. Kids have been killed in schools that are hit by tornado. (that season is coming)
I'm not sure what my point is here.
There are always things to worry about but the gun stuff seems so awful.

I just hope they all can stay as safe as possible.

Until this crisis is met head on by thinking adults, this will continue to happen. I am sick of hearing from the "guns don't kill, people do" crowd. Apparently it is not their kids that are being killed!

They get shot by 2, 3, or 4 year old kids who pick up the gun. Now that tickles me when it happens.

But then, I read about the same kids who kill their sibling or playmate.

13. One of the most heartbreaking stories I read ...

There was an active shooter alert at an elementary school and all the clasrooms were locked down. Fortunately it turned out to be a false alarm. A little girl came home with something written in red marker on her arm. He mother asked what it said. She showed her that it said, "I love you mommy" and explained, I wrote it so if I had been killed and my body was found you would know I love you.

In some of the 'duck and cover/active shooter in school' training that teachers have children write their names and parents' phone numbers on their arm to assist in potential identification of remains in the aftermath? Or did I make this up in my irony-riddled brain?

So convenient! That would save them so much time and effort!

14. Good on him, but this is tragic that kids are on the front lines.

And that they can very likely be faced with the choice to sacrifice themselves to save others. I wouldn't want to be put in that position as an adult.

I think my Facebook account is finally deleted, and I realized how sad it is that it takes longer to delete a Facebook account than the waiting period to purchase a firearm.

I heard on NPR today that in TN residents are storing guns in their cars to protect them during a carjacking. Sounds like you don't need a license for conceal/carry there because your car is considered an extension of your home and property. An unexpected consequence: guns are being stolen from cars at a higher rate. Brilliant. And so convenient not to have to carry your gun to your car when you want to zip out for groceries...
