Ukraine election: Comedian Zelensky 'wins presidency by landslide'

Source: BBC

Ukrainian comedian Volodymyr Zelensky has won a run-off election to become the country's next president by a landslide, exit polls suggest.

The polls give him more than 70% support. He dominated the first round of voting three weeks ago when 39 candidates were on the ticket.

Mr Zelensky challenged incumbent president Petro Poroshenko.

Mr Poroshenko has admitted defeat but told supporters gathered in Kiev that he will not leave politics.

A comic actor with no experience in politics, who avoided taking any policy position at all. What a leap in the dark. OK, he can't be as bad a person as Trump, but who knows how he'll handle the job?

3. I wish they'd drop "the comedian" prefix for this guy.

He was a presidential candidate and now he is president. I didn't notice Trump's name preceded by "TV reality show star" in every reference to him during the campaign.

5. That's because Trump was a dishonest motherfucker before he was a reality TV star

and famous for it. This guy only became known as an actor. Then he ran for office. Would you prefer "nobody"?

6. So why didn't they prefix that before his name?

9. Maybe it should have been...

The fact he was ever legitimized by the media will be one of the biggest blows this country has experienced in its history.

4. Now he'll get "the talk" by the Russians. We'll see how comedy helps him after that.

7. That's it, I'm changing my preference to Sasha Baron Cohen, 2020!

Actually, is there any chance he's actually the President of Ukraine, right now?

Can we really rule it out?

If he peeled off his mask at the inauguration, would anyone be THAT surprised?

8. Apparently he wants to join the E.U.

If these weren’t such dangerous times, I’d pull out the popcorn. Instead, wishing him well battling poverty and corruption.

10. My Ukrainian relatives are extremely skeptical.

I guess we’ll see if this guy has any willpower against Putin or not.

11. Hope it turns out better than Guatemala's Jimmy Morales - or our own Cheeto!

Desperation is bad counsel, and desperate voters sometimes reach for the most irreverent candidates, hoping that actually means something.

That said, All the Best to Mr. Zelensky. He's got his job cut out for him.

13. Well, this should be interesting.

...Poroshenko was corrupt, however, if he just "treads water" it will be a success.

Desperation often leads to poor choices, Putin could very well be smiling again.
