John Bercow must let Donald Trump address Parliament to bolster special relationship, ministers say

Source: The Telegraph

John Bercow must allow President Donald Trump to address Parliament this summer or risk damaging Britain's special relationship with the US, ministers have suggested.

Preparations are underway for President Trump to make a full State visit to the UK in June to coincide with D-Day 75th anniversary commemorations.

But the Speaker is refusing to extend the traditional courtesy of asking the visiting President to address both Houses of Parliament.

US officials have made it clear that they are angered by Mr Bercow’s snub, which has become an embarrassment to the Government as it tries to make the State visit happen three years after it was first offered by Theresa May.

2. Our relationship with the UK is way, way, way....

Larger than one person. Please forgive my contratian view on this, but I believe the British should give the President of the United States (notice I gave the title, not the name of the current officeholder's name) a platform to speak. There would be ways to present this as a privilege for the President.

I'm certainly no fan of Jeremy Corbyn, and if he were to be made PM and wanted to address Congress, it would never cross my mind to deny him the podium.

5. No, I strongly disagree

Trump is a criminal. A thief. A conman. A bigot. A racist. A rapist. he has done nothing but disgrace and dishonor the office he holds.

He reached that office based on lies.

He is hated in the UK.

He is an embarrassment and an idiot.

I see no reason to give a narcissistic buttplug like trump a stage to ramble and vomit his hate from.

33. Why should Parliament give him the opportunity to do what he did in the German Legislature ?

Has everyone here forgotten how he insulted Chancellor Merkel and the German people in his address there ? Why should the Brits enable him to do the same to them ? He knows NO ONE in the country likes him or wants him there. The protests around him visiting were quite clear in their message - NAFF OFF. The floating trump-baby blimp . . .

Quite frankly, every time he travel internationally, he humiliates and embarrasses the US.

ENOUGH.

Give him the microphone.

There are no losers in the Trump-will/Trump-won't debate about addressing Parliament. But fearing him speak before Parliament makes a loud statement itself.

4. As a Brit, I disagree

that "he" should be welcomed, because of his position as president. The British people loathe him, saw him as a fraud from the start. This visit will be a carnival, lots of baby tRump balloons flying. The former Democratic presidents would be welcomed with open arms. We know QUALITY, DECENCY when we see it. tRump has neither.

He demoralizes the social order of this country every day of his presidency.

He does nothing but throw banalities at this special relationship.

Thank you for rejecting him.

6. NO

He has to be reminded he is a world pariah.
He is not decent and his accidental election is a farce.
We might not be able to stop a formal state Visit
But he cant slink along the alleyways like Jack the Ripper.
He needs to be out where people can "greet" him
Properly.
No parliment speech. No gold carriages.
Lots of fat nixon balloons.

8. Watch Obama's speech to Parliament in Westminster

Trump could never deliver the same level of respect, professionalism, and understanding of our special relationship with the United Kingdom.

Quite frankly, Bercow did Trump and America a favor. NOT allowing Trump to address parliament strengthens our relationship. Trump will most certainly embarrass himself and America by proxy.

24. That's exactly what I was thinking.

It would be gratifying if that turd was heckled so loudly that he couldn't be heard, but just the thought of him being able to address Parliament sickens me and I hope he's never allowed - it'd serve him right. Remember when he made the Queen wait 15 minutes in the hot summer sun for his arrival? And from what I understand, he tried to flip the truth and said She kept him waiting. He's SUCH a global embarrasment!

19. A state visit is a big deal. I wonder how it came about.

I was surprised when this was announced because most people in the UK despise Trump. I suspect he has had people negotiating behind the scenes and making threats that if he doesn’t get a state visit with all the pomp he did not get on his last trip, he will ensure that no trade deal is available between the US and UK when Brexit occurs. Trump will use carefully edited video of this visit in his reelection campaign to show his supporters that the whole world adores him and is bowing down to him and his brilliant policies. The UK may have had no choice, but I really hate that they are according him an honor he does not deserve.

I’m sure that protesters will be out in force, but we all know that Fox News will not show them.

41. I'd love to see him banned from Britain, at least as a State vistor.

To further embarrass him and show his supporters and fellow GOP members how he has dragged down the office to the degree that even Britain refuses to host him.

But on the other hand, if its going to spark a yuuuuuuuuge protest, maybe some creative performance art, that will also be effective. I just hope if he comes, the Conservative gov won't be cowed into setting up "protest zones" for "safety reasons", a mile away.
