The Russians are screwing with the GPS system to send bogus navigation data to thousands of ships

This discussion thread was locked as off-topic by Omaha Steve (a host of the Latest Breaking News forum).

On May 15, 2018, under a sunny sky, Russian President Vladimir Putin drove a bright orange truck in a convoy of construction vehicles for the opening of the Kerch Bridge from Russia to Crimea. At 11 miles long, it is now the longest bridge in either Europe or Russia.

As Putin drove across the bridge, something weird happened. The satellite navigation systems in the control rooms of more than 24 ships anchored nearby suddenly started displaying false information about their location. Their GPS systems told their captains they were anchored more than 65 kilometres away - on land, at the Anapa Airport.

This was not a random glitch, according to the Centre for Advanced Defense, a security think tank. It was a deliberate plan to make it difficult for anyone nearby to track or navigate around the presence of Putin, C4AD says.

... snip ...

The jamming, blocking, or spoofing of GNSS signals by the Russian government is "more indiscriminate and persistent, larger in scope, and more geographically diverse than previous public reporting suggested," according to the Weekly Intelligence Summary from Digital Shadows, a cyber security monitoring service.

4. Scary, but not surprising that they would hack the global navigation satellite system like that.

It wasn't that long ago they hacked into our power grid system, and they have NOT stopped probing ....

16. It was reported that during recent military exercises in Europe ...

That the same thing happened (or they tried to cause it to happen) to make troop movements and coordination more difficult.

"More widely reported" is the key phrase here. Not that they're doing it.

Note that when Russia decided to set up their own GPS-like system it was primarily billed in the US media as something between due to paranoia, an overbearing sense of wanting to be independent, or simply wanting a separate system for economic and financial reasons. Because for the media, it's either all about political power or economic power (which pretty much sums up their world view, and often the two are conflated in 'politics = money'; it's their own value system that's being used as the only way to describe another's rather different value system by those who view themselves as most culturally aware and diverse.)

Is Flight 370 and the disappearing Boeing 777, and Boeing 737 Max 8s that suddenly crash without warning.

17. The 737s didn't crash suddenly without warning.

The earlier flights had the same thing happening to them, they just weren't fatal. It wasn't some mysterious external force that brought them down. It was Boeing rushing out poorly designed and insufficiently tested new planes.

11. I've had this happen while I was flying.

it’s very strange to see, even when you recognize it for what it is. The aviation industry uses GPS so routinely that widespread, unannounced jamming of the system would cause havoc.

We have other ways to navigate, but the jammed signals look perfectly normal until you suddenly find yourself in a location different from where the system says you are.

Bad actors with the right equipment could do a lot of harm with this technology.

for protection of US athletes during the Olympics. Obama called for them to be there over Putin's protest.

The military's guidance systems are hardened, but just in case.....

Me thinks ole Vlad is a bit worried about inbound guided missiles with his slimy name on them. Polonium Vlad should be worried.

18. The article doesn't say, but there is a difference between military and civilian gps

They operate on different signals, the military version is higher resolution and encrypted. Screwing with the civilian version does not imply that the military version was affected.

19. The United States has the same thing

According to advisories issues throughout the region, the effects of the massive GPS jammers used to approximate combat conditions will likely be felt beyond the confines of the training area, however, and the DoD warns that the exercises may cause delays in Las Vegas’ McCarran Airport, as well as others as far away as Los Angeles. Flights may be forced to reroute, and others could “experience navigational disruption, including suspension of Descend-via and Climb-via procedures.”

We know about it, we know how to do it, and we train for it.

GPS has been around so long that most industrialized nations have some means of disrupting local GPS to make it more difficult for precision guided weapons like the JDAM. China has it, Great Britain has it, France has it, the Israelis have it, as well as any country with a large enough military budget to buy a system.
