Six states sue agriculture department over 'weakened' school lunch rules

Source: Associated Press

Six states and the District of Columbia have sued the US Department of Agriculture (USDA), saying it weakened nutritional standards in school breakfasts and lunches when the Trump administration relaxed the requirements affecting salt and refined grains last year.

The lawsuit in Manhattan federal court asked a judge to overturn the changes, saying they were carried out in an arbitrary and capricious manner.

The government “significantly weakened” nutritional standards for sodium and whole grains, according to the lawsuit filed on Wednesday, without giving the public a chance to comment on them and in opposition to nutritional requirements for school meals set by Congress.

The states and DC said the standards should be based on recommendations of the US government’s “Dietary Guidelines for Americans,” the National Academy of Sciences and scientific research regarding children’s nutrition.

1. Somehow, I am not surprised that the tRump cabal did this.

My question: why?

Well, I suspect that it has to do with contributors to that evil administration, so follow the money!

Children's welfare be damned! All hail folks who contribute to the tRump re-election campaign!

3. Why? In the end its all about the $$$ for them and in this case more than one person probably owns

significant stock in a company that stands to gain by going with supplying cheaper and unhealthier food to the schools for the kids.

6. $$$$$$ is the answer, always!

When I was a teacher and I attended a school board meeting the subject od soft drinks in school vending machines would be allowed to continue selling sugary sodas. They decided to allow only Coke or Pepsi. Someone asked why not stop the sales of all sodas and the truth came out...Coke or Pepsi was paying the district to allow their supply. Schools are about $$$, not the kids. I learned that lesson really fast.
