U.S. to expand abortion 'gag rule,' won't fund certain groups: Pompeo

Source: Reuters

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The Trump administration on Tuesday expanded its anti-abortion policies, prohibiting U.S.-funded organizations from supporting other groups that support abortion and forbidding the use of U.S. tax dollars to lobby for or against abortion.

In 2017, Trump reinstated a policy known by critics as the “global gag rule,” which requires foreign nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) that receive U.S. family planning funds to certify they do not provide abortions or give abortion advice.

U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said on Tuesday the United States will expand the policy by cracking down on NGOs that fund other groups that support abortion.

The United States will also enforce the federal law forbidding the use of U.S. funding, including foreign assistance, to lobby for or against abortion, he added.

Harmed. Sometimes one should compromise oneself for a greater good. Radicals can't do that.

is the objective of providing family planning funding to those in need throughout the world too expensive and therefore should this dRumpf policy not be challenged? IMO I think Dems use the too high a price argument as a way to avoid fighting for progressive ideals.

Pompeo cuts OAS funds over advocacy of legal abortion

By Carol Morello March 26 at 2:58 PM

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said Tuesday that he is reducing the U.S. contribution to the Organization of American States, an ally in the pressure campaign on Venezuela, because of its advocacy of abortion rights.

Pompeo’s decision to cut $210,000 in funding comes after nine senators sent him a letter last month pointing out OAS organs that campaign for legalized abortion across the Americas.

Luis Almagro, the OAS secretary general, has called for repealing restrictions on abortion throughout much of Latin America and the Caribbean.

Pompeo said he had ordered the full enforcement of a 1981 law, the Siljander Amendment, that prohibits the use of U.S. funds to lobby for or against abortion rights.

“The institutions of the OAS should be focused on addressing crises in Cuba, Nicaragua and Venezuela, not advancing the pro-abortion cause,” he said.
