ACLU: Black man detained while moving into his own home
16 minutes ago
TONGANOXIE, Kan. (AP) The American Civil Liberties of Kansas has asked for a state investigation after a black man was detained by local police while moving into his own home.
The ACLU said Thursday that Karle Robinson was held at gunpoint and handcuffed as he moved into a home he had purchased in Tonganoxie, about 30 miles (48 kilometers) west of Kansas City.
Robinson says police harassed him and that Tonganoxies police chief stopped him from filing a racial bias complaint.
Police Chief Greg Lawson says he had not seen the ACLUs allegations and would comment later.

(6,045 posts)obviously have a lot of power in almost every law enforcement agency in the country or so it seems! I'm as pasty deep south white as they come & I'm so freakin sick of this shit! ...And if the "white trash cracker cops" doing crap like this were not bad enough add on the FACT the majority of my fellow pasty white brethren act as if there is not a nationwide systemic problem despite multiple incidents in the news every fucking week! But HOLY HELL if an African American complains white America will get all bitchy just prolonging the problem & literally costing lives! IT IS DISGUSTING!
...OFF TOPIC...Hey, Submariner, is that avatar pic "Jacques Cousteau" the marine explorer, scientist who used to do all the nature shows centered around the ocean? Back in the 1970s & 80s I think when I was a kid I LOVED watching his programs!! I know he did all kinds of other stuff as well...In my mind he was the guy who made nature programming awesome!

(12,497 posts)His TV show ran from '68 to '75, which covers the time when I got out of the Navy and went back to school. I became a fisheries scientist because of him and his program.
I was a city kid in the Navy able to scuba dive the Caribbean islands in the late '60s when it was pristine before tourists ever arrived. That experience was inspirational, and then when Cousteau came on the scene, I was an instant convert to get into the ocean business.
And, sorry about the white trash cracker cops comment which was out of line.

(6,045 posts)I'm jealous! What better way to be inspired & I can only imagine the experiences you had back then & through your career! Nice to hear stories like that!
No worries on the cop comment...I too make comments I look back at & think maybe I should've counted to 10. But honestly what you said is basically true & just SAD.

(29,322 posts)The video was posted on another forum that no longer exists where people went undercover filming trying to ask for a complaint form. There were instances of them following them out to the parking lot. I wish I knew where I could find the video.

(6,045 posts)First, Thank-you for posting the video!
...When it comes to law enforcement in the USA & their fucking arrogant "I"M ABOVE ALL GODS & ANY LAWS" attitudes I couldn't even stomach the first 2min of the video! My wife was in near fatal head on crash back in 1997 & she had horrible brain injuries, broken bones, etc. She was in ICU for 38 days & in house rehab for 4 months! So, at the one year anniversary of her wreck we had a big party for her...There were doctors, nurses, my friends lawyers, her boss lawyer & many other professionals. Anyway, around 9pm the cops show up in all black battle fatigues with sweat bands on for a so-called disturbing the peace call but they were the one's who came to disturb the peace! They arrested 8 people & were being so incredibly EVIL desperately trying to get someone to get physical with them I swear they were all on METH!!! Anyway, the whole night is ruined everyone who is arrested has to pay bail & then all the charges are dropped when it comes time for court! They just wanted to try & start a fight because they were bored in a small city of 3000 people & all they got was back talk. There is no method to properly punish cops especially when it is 5-6 of them acting as a government sanctioned GANG OF THUGS!!! Oh yeah, 4 of them I know could not tie their own shoes due to the absurd amount of muscle mass!!
I forgot...We are all white or they would've shot us I'm sure!!

(54,270 posts)I'd file a felony assault charge along with the false arrest charge, and make every move VERY public, with German and British press present, and copies of all reports sent to the Kansas Chamber of Commerce with the note "are you SURE you're doing everything possible to encourage investment in your state?"
The Police Chief's statement is pure BS of course. He's trying to buy time to figure out how to wiggle out of this without getting charged with obstruction for preventing Robinson from filing a complaint. He didn't need to see the ACLU's allegations. He was an accomplice after the fact.

snip--It was 2:30 in the morning. His moving project had turned into a 12-hour marathon, and the heavy, unwieldy TV was all that he had left to take inside.
I could use a hand with this, Robinson said to the officer who shined a flashlight on him.
Hed spend the next eight minutes handcuffed, seated in front of his own house, treated like a burglary suspect while the officer waited for backup to check his story. The officers explanations struck him as flimsy. His complaints, taken to the Tonganoxie police chief, went nowhere.
snip--But Robinson told the officer that he was a new homeowner, moving in. He had identification and there was paperwork proving his new ownership inside. They could go in together and look, and maybe hoist this TV inside on the way.

BTW. I'm wondering why it the cops 12 hrs to notice a 'possible break in?'

He doesn't go into details on why, but he said he was on a tight schedule and he had to get inside. Maybe he spent all day and night working and had to return the moving van (looked like u-haul) in the morning, or he had to be back at work first thing in the morning and his stuff had to be out of his old place. I can think of many possible scenarios where that could be the case. It shouldn't matter either way.
Now, I understand the police coming by and asking what's going on, but they didn't need to handcuff him or pull their weapons on him just 'cause he was doing a normal activity outside "normal" hours. The police should operate on the idea that citizens are innocent unless they have good reason to believe otherwise. This is something that the police have problems with when dealing with all citizens, but certain racial groups (particularly African Americans) seem to bear the brunt of it.
Many police departments and police officers have a screwed up mindset when it comes to policing. They treat us as if we're all enemies and they are an occupying army in a war zone. There are some police departments that are working on changing that, but we really need to have a country wide movement toward changing this mindset.

(4,033 posts)When my parents bought their first house it was in a new subdivision. The builder was running behind schedule and the house wasn't quite finished. The interior hadn't been painted and a few other things weren't quite ready. But, my parents had to move since they had given notice on their apartment and had to be out.
So, they worked all day then went to the new house in the evening to do the painting and other little finishing touches. One evening around 11:30 pm there was a knock on the door. It was a local police officer who patrolled the neighborhood and noticed lights on in a theoretically unoccupied house. My folks explained what they were doing, he officer smiled and went on his way. About 20 minutes later there was another knock on the door. It was the same officer, but this time he had coffee and doughnuts with him. He figured if my parents had worked all day and then were working late into the night to get their house ready, they might need a pick-me-up.
That's how cops are supposed to act.

https://www.kansascity.com/news/local/crime/article228222764.htmlHe should not have been handcuffed or had weapons drawn on him. I don't understand why the police have to act like they are in a war zone and citizens are the enemies.

(62,265 posts)What the fuck do you think cops, without cause, going in to his house and rifling through his possessions constitutes?
Like the guy said, if he was a white dude, they would've walked up, asked what was up, assessed the situation, gone inside with him to get the papers, and explain the call they got.
And he's 100% right. If it was a white dude it would've been a simple conversation.
But because he was black he was detained, cuffed, and 3 other cops were called in on him.
Absolutely ridiculous.
