Jeb Bush says a Republican should run against Trump in 2020

Jeb Bush said he thinks a fellow Republican should challenge President Donald Trump in 2020, according to a portion of an interview for the series “The Axe Files.”

The excerpt was tweeted by show host David Axelrod, a commentator and ex-adviser to former President Barack Obama. Axelrod’s interview with Bush, who went up against Trump in the 2016 Republican primary, is set to air on CNN at 7 p.m. on Saturday.

“I think someone should run just because Republicans ought to be given a choice,” Bush said. “It’s hard to beat a sitting president, but to have a conversation about what it is to be a conservative, I think it’s important.”

Axelrod wrote in a subsequent tweet that Bush, a former Florida governor, had been “incredibly candid on all fronts,” including on the state of the country and the Republican Party.

1. As long as his name isn't Bush.

Not sure which would make me puke more. Yet another Bush. Or another race against Trump.

3. "What it is to be a conservative"

I think we are seeing what the GOP thinks a "family based, Christian" conservative is. They voted one into office and are still approving his actions by a huge margin. They treasure him as a person who will pack the courts with antiwomen rights, anitvoting/POC rights, anti LGBTQ rights judges, put children in cages to "protect" us , give tax breaks to their richest donors, take away social security and medicare, decrease and/or destroy any safety measures for the poor and ill. The list is endless and he is the savior who is providing them all.

7. Good idea. A sitting president who gets primaried doesn't survive to a second term & Jeb knows it...

Which is something all of us should consider.

He's not wrong about the need for the GOP to do some soul-searching about the meaning of "conservative." I just don't have any hope that they will do so until they are in rubble.

13. Valid point.

That's held true for the last 40 years. In 1972, Nixon was challenged by two minor opponents in the early republican primaries (Pete McCloskey and John Ashbrook). But those were not serious challenges. Nixon didn't have to use any resources to easily beat them. Nor did they expose his being a criminal.

A serious challenge to Trump in 2020, should he still be in office, would be a delight.

10. Jeb should do it!

It would cripple Trump AND make Jeb unrunnable in the future as he would be a Judas to the Trumpsters.

15. Good luck with that, Jebbie.

I don't know if you noticed this, but your party went a few years ago from being merely diabolically greedy to completely batshit insane.

16. I would love to have a "normal" Republican president about now.

You know, the kind you could vehemently disagree with, but you’d never suspect they’re secretly working with foreign governments to weaken the United States and our alliances. You know, non-traitors. What ever happened to them?

19. Locking...

A consensus of the Forum Hosts feel Jeb Bush is a former Governor and former candidate for the GOP nomination, he's a private citizen now. His opinion is not important news of national interest
