Dick's CEO: Thoughts, prayers don't do anything

New York (CNN Business)Dick's Sporting Goods will stop selling guns and ammunition at 125 stores where firearm sales have struggled.
The company removed firearms and hunting accessories from 10 stores last fall as a test. The test went well and sales grew in those stores, Dick's said. So the company decided to pull guns, ammunition, and firearm accessories from an additional 125 stores where sales of the merchandise have underperformed.

.................................................

"We look at this as a multi-year initiative," he said. "If it goes as well as expected, we would probably take another batch of stores next year," Stack said.
Last February, the company said it would stop selling assault-style weapons after the mass shooting at a Parkland, Florida, high school shooting. It also raised the minimum age for all gun sales to 21 and stopped selling high-capacity magazines that hold a large number of bullets for semi-automatic weapons.
Stack made the decisions after he learned that the teen charged with the Parkland shooting had bought a shotgun at a Dick's store. It didn't matter to him that the gun wasn't used in the attack..............................

Whatever his reason, I am glad. I like Dicks sporting store--mainly the clothes. Quality clothes that last IMHO

1. Kudos to Dick's Sporting. Gun Love is waning, albeit slowly in some white wing gun-stroker enclaves.

13. Always respect spokepeople from the Gungeon, but that chart goes only to 2013. The change is recent.

AND, I'm talking about support waning among the 66% who don't own guns, or the significant percentage of gun owners who aren't attached to the dang things and realize coddling gun-lovers is detrimental.

17. A Negro was President then.

Better update your chart now that Cheeto Jesus has put Gundamentalists back to sleep.

4. I went in to our local store and thanked the manager for this move.

And asked him to pass it up to his superiors.

Any time I need sports-related merch (admittedly, not often), that's where I go.

5. Dick's Sporting Goods

was never about Fire Arms. It was always about the Youth Sports Programs in their local communities. Fire Arms were added as a quick profit item. Sure nice to see these folks get back to the real mission.

Notice Bass Pro Shops are still shuttering Stores and unloading dead Real Estate, that Cabela's Deal is just not cutting it.

10. Stupid me.

I thought Cabela's bought Bass Pro Shops. I am not an outdoors type, so what they sell is of no interest to me. Thanks for correcting me.

11. No problem.

Used to love Bass Pro Shops for fishing gear and Camping supplies. Once they went full bore pushing the NRA,that was enough for us. Started using the Internet after that experience .

7. I wrote out three thank-you cards and hand-carried them

into three local Dick’s stores after they stopped selling assault rifles.

Asked for a manager. One appeared immediately. They each accepted my thank-you card and stopped to listen to me. One was very restrained, polite, and all-business. But the other two? My goodness! VERY responsive, friendly, even enthusiastic. They each gushed about the public response they’d seen - ALL positive. Some people had sent in flowers or cookies. Tons of good feedback. At the third encounter, I engaged with the young woman manager. But then a young male colleague came over, and he was downright bubbly with delight at the public reaction. They were clearly having a great day at work that day.

I asked them to pass my thank-you note up the food chain. They all said they would.

Positive reinforcement! It’s a good thing! Also gratifying when you hear in little unscientific “polls” like this - how many others out there who feel the same way you do. It was empowering, for sure!

8. At 125 stores where firearm sales have struggled.

Strictly a business decision and not altruism. It's all about the Benjamin's baby.

14. The article indicates sales

At Dicks are down. Cutting high overhead products with small margins, such as guns, is a sound business move.

Apparently the bump in business when they made the announcement of discontinuing assault rifles has not held up long term.

15. I very rarely go in there and usually when I do I don't buy anything.

They are high; even their "sale" and "clearance" prices are nothing to write home about.

9. Dicks's runs the sports app called Game Changer

which I use to follow my son's Little League and travel baseball tournaments. I got into a tussle with another parent on my kiddo's team when he was admonishing me for using the Dick's app because of their gun policy...It was easy to tell him that their gun policy was the reason I use their app! He was all bent out of shape. Win!

18. The moment we elect our Democratic President, gun sales will explode

And she’ll preside over the most expansive gun control laws in US history. No more psychos buying guns or ammo.
