BRASILIA (Reuters) - Brazil’s right-wing government has ordered environmental enforcement agency Ibama not to respond to requests from the media, stoking fears that President Jair Bolsonaro may be rolling back environmental protections out of the public eye.

Bolsonaro assumed office on Jan. 1 after pledging on the campaign trail to curb environmental fines, a key tool employed by Ibama to enforce its regulations. He has also floated the idea of pulling Brazil out of the Paris Agreement on climate change.

Activists and non-governmental organizations fear the moves could drive up deforestation and other environmental destruction.

. . .

“Reducing the mechanisms by which society is informed about environmental issues in Brazil is an affront to (the country’s freedom of information law) and the right to information, and only reinforces the view that they are promoting the dismantling of environmental management in Brazil,” the statement added.

Having this fascist in the Presidency who has told the world he intends to break up and exploit protected land belonging to Brazil's indigenous population, which signals desperate suffering for the people there, whose ancestors in Brazil in the rain forest reach back thousands of years, is a threat to the ENTIRE WORLD. It's no small matter.

Brazil's formerly vast rain forest has been deemed the "lungs of the world" for a very long time.

This pro-dictatorship President intends to invade it with huge transmission lines breaking it into pieces, and he has signaled he will be opening some of that land to mining.

The world cannot afford it. The Amazon has been decimated already by illegal logging. Environmentalists have been assassinated trying to save it, one several years ago was an American nun, Sister Dorothy Strang, who was a contracted murder by hired assassins working for a rancher who wanted to raze the forest, and let his cattle take over.

It cannot be emphasized enough that what is happening in Brazil is totally destructive, and it couldn't happen at a worse time.

The President Bolsonaro is coming to Washington in the next day or two to huddle with Trump.

Thank you.

2. Looks as if they are merging interests in invading Venezuela.

Both fascists, both racists, both dirtbags, they probably both see all kinds of ways they can benefit immediately, and in the long term.

It's a real shame.

The same countries which worked hand-in-fist with US right-wing, military, and industrial appetites being satiated through the most horrific dictatorships in the Western Hemisphere, have been edging their way back together after the people of the Americas elected leftist Presidents while George W. was occupied trying to control all the mid-east, with the help of his and Cheney's "Coalition of the Willing."

Very ugly picture.

They are going to lose control of the people of the Americas all over again, and one day they won't be able to overturn the will of the people, at long last.

Evil can't win, in the end.

4. This is how elites destroy the world. Climate change is meaningless to them.

The Amazon forest takes in 1/4 of the carbon that all forests on Earth take in. No longer, under Bolsonaro.

When trees die, they release into the atmosphere centuries of carbon stored within them. Wildfires are among the most feared climate feedback loops because forests -- which are carbon sinks -- when clear cut, become carbon unleashers, the sites of mudslides and desertification.

Bolsonaro's deforestation will release the equivalent of 13.12 GIGATONS of carbon.

Last year, the US emitted about 5 GIGATONS.

Bolsonaro's one policy will release between two and three times the annual carbon impact of the entire American economy, with all its airplanes, autos and coal plants.

China is the world's worst emitter, with 9.1 GIGATONS OF EMISSIONS.

Bolsonaro's policy adds, in one year, the equivalent of a whole second China and on top of that, a whole second United States -- 13.12 gigatons of carbon.

Warm, dry forests catch fire, release more carbon, bring in the bugs, trigger climate cycles of mudslides and desertification, high heat, brutal cycles of more burned forests, more carbon, more heat...

More cascading chaos will upend us, turn violently against us and everything we ever thought to be stable. Around and within these man-made disaster areas, homes and roads become death traps, air and water become poison. Human destruction turns idyllic mountain vistas into permanent, indiscriminate killers.

I got the above facts from David Wallace-Wells' The Uninhabitable Earth (2018).

Bolsonaro continues to turn his land base into a hell hole, unleashing more death worldwide.

Extractors must be stopped. They are Earth predators who will kill us all.

5. It's overwhelming. Thank you for taking the time to share that information for this subject.

Doesn't seem right that conspiring to place one monster in the President's office could trigger so very much destruction. It will just about kick the door shut on hope for what's left of this world. It's all connected. We won't just do business as usual afterward.

7. Horrific.

And of planetary consequences.
We are fighting a multi-front fight between good and evil, for the survival of democracy, and the survival of the planet, all over the globe.

9. Locking...

Forum Hosts agree this Brazil news doesn't rise to "national interest" threshold - Venezuela does, but not Brazil.
