Parents, actresses, coaches, among those charged in massive college cheating admission scandal

In what is being called the largest college admissions scam ever prosecuted, wealthy parents, Hollywood actresses, coaches and college prep executives have been accused of carrying out a nationwide fraud to get students into prestigious universities, according to a federal indictment.

The scheme had two major pieces. In the first part, parents allegedly paid a college prep organization to take the test on behalf of students or to correct their answers. Second, the organization allegedly bribed college coaches to help admit the students into college as recruited athletes, regardless of their abilities, prosecutors said.

Federal court documents also allege that some defendants created fake athletic profiles for students to make them appear to be successful athletes.

In all, 50 people were charged in the criminal investigation that went by the name "Operation Varsity Blues." Those arrested include two SAT/ACT administrators, one exam proctor, nine coaches at elite schools, one college administrator and 33 parents, according to Andrew Lelling, the US attorney for Massachusetts.

1. I had no idea this sort of thing was this rampant.

These were just the ones caught. I bet a lot of wealthy people do this. It's sickening. And what does that teach the kids?

Same thing was done for George W. Bush, Trump, and others.

It's sickening, when I think of the deserving hard working students whose places they were going to take, or did take.

This was high level stuff. It included in some cases photoshopping student's faces onto other kids playing a sport, to falsely represent that the student was playing that sport, when he didn't. I mean...really.

2. The schools involved...

... will be annoyed at not being bribed directly (in the way Jared's dad did for him, which is considered to be perfectly acceptable for some reason).

3. That makes me sad for all the deserving kids who were knocked off the list.

And angry at all the people who look down on others who didn't go to this or that ivy league or excellent school. Now we know how THEY got in.

Biggest non-story since the last non-story the trump "justice" dept. floated like another turd going down the sewage creek.

about Felicify Huffman being mixed up in all of this is her kids could have legacyed into several fine schools uncluding the Ivy League. Ugh.

21. Makes you wonder just what the real goal is

Power? Influence? Just because you can?

Legacy - that's another college entry scandal that should be investigated, IMO.

7. It would be news if this sort of thing

didn't happen. Is there anyone so naive as to think GW Bush got into Yale on his merits? Or that Trump, with his abysmal grades, was admitted to Penn as a result of his intellectual prowess? The dumbass spawn of the 1% have always bought their way in. This is a huge non story.

9. Bush was a legacy. He got in fair and square that way.

These people donated money to a fake charity and wrote it off on their taxes among other things. Not only did they break the law they crossed the IRS. Such idiocy.

11. Yes, from the DOJ press release...

Many clients then filed personal tax returns that falsely reported the payment to the KWF as charitable donations.

with his record.

but i get what you are saying in that it wasn't done in an illegal way as compared to this case .

10. It's good that this is being busted out. Another nut punch to the oligarchy.

The only way we'll reduce the power of the oligarchy is by breaking up the old networks
and scams that they live by. Never stop chipping away.

12. My alma mater somehow was apparently involved.

I don't consider it elite in the least. Come on, they let me in after all. Who would cheat to get into UT? Sure, it's a good and solid university, but it's not elite by any measure.

14. Trump must be so proud of them. You know that is how he got into a good school....

in 2014, my son was wait listed at Stanford. Makes me wonder. Oh well, had he gone there, we would still be paying off loans. He got a great education at Cal, and he is debt free. Still pisses me off that wealthy parents can buy their kids into school. I would imagine that they probably bought their degrees also.
